That's OCD. Let yourself feel the discomfort of the situation instead of trying to fix the scenario in your mind. Let yourself think of the wrong scenario and just feel all the wrongness! If you try to fix it, you're acting on a compulsion and teaching your brain that the dark scene is a legitimate threat.
