The best way to stop checking is to not engage, whenever you feel a what if pop up let it pop up and dont engage by fighting it off or proving it wrong/right just say “maybe yes maybe not” or “that would really suck” the thoughts will most likely start getting even more louder but eventually get tired and slow down / get quiter
