I do the same thing. Try diffusing the thought. I find “musical thoughts” are helpful- singing your worry to the tune of happy birthday, or jingle bells. Even taking it a step further and writing a full parody of a pop song.

Maybe follow up. They may have read it but forgot to respond. I can relate to the stress over unanswered texts.
It’s perfectly reasonable to follow up as long as it doesn’t become a compulsion.
