  • Real Events OCD

Has anyone been treated for real event ocd? I know it’s no different than any other type but would be curious to hear from others. Thanks!

Following this thread because I have the same question. It seems like a hard theme to treat, especially for someone new to the diagnosis

Not a therapist but from what I understand the treatment would be the same as any other form.

Hi Newbaby2020$, for me it has been using ERP, the same as my other sub-types. These are just my experiences and mainly deal with events that I either caused or helped cause, so your results may vary. The hardest part for me has been forgiving myself, even though others have, and just letting it go. The main thing I try to remind myself is that no amount of worrying or ruminating will ever change the past, so focus on the now, because that’s what I can affect. Granted it’s easier for me to say than to follow sometimes, especially because some of my events are so recent. It can be tricky with memories from years past because they can get borderline false memory-ish because the more I would think about them the more distorted they would get over time to the point of questioning if they ever even occurred. I tend to be worst critic (well aside from my OCD bully) which hasn’t helped with recovery. Also, be open and honest with your therapist about the real events that your OCD has latched onto, otherwise they won’t be able to fully help and guide you to the right ERP exercises you need. ERP has certainly helped me a lot. Feel free to ask any questions you like. I’m no therapist, but I’ll help in any way I can. Hang in there and best wishes.

@Newbaby2020$ I’m sorry to hear about your trauma, but I know you can overcome this. I’d say the main thing ERP has helped me with is to try to turn the volume down, so to speak, on the intrusive thoughts related to the events I struggle with so that I don’t react to them as easily as I once did. Also keeping in mind that I can’t change the past so worrying about it just hurts myself and that if the ones I’ve hurt don’t hold a grudge then why so I insist on doing so? ERP can definitely help with getting the life back that you once had, or at least closer to it than you feel now. Funny to hear you refer to me as a very kind person, in my eyes it’s hard for me to think of myself as such, despite what others say, but I’m working on that doubt courtesy of ocd as well. Take care.
