@Ania Mizyn Your anxiety about the THOUGHT will go down and you’ll eventually disregard the thought. ERP is magic just trust the process ❤️

i think it’s to evoke anxiety so you learn to sit with the anxiety, at least that’s what my counsellor taught me, i think it’s called the anxiety curve or something?

It's supposed to put you in the triggering situation/thought (or situations, starting with the least triggering) long enough for the anxiety to appear and then disappear, so that you slowly see that the compulsions are not necessary, and that you can deal with the thought without the compulsive part.

I don't think I can handle the panic and anxiety, this is why I've not done it yet. ... I've had CBT and it was the worse experience of my whole life. .. I cant even imagine ERP will do to Mr. I had to quit my CBT cause the therapist was telling me things that weren't true about me and my relationship with my husband, she created an ever lastly fear of doubt now. I cant get past it. That was 35 years ago and I'm afraid to go to anyone because of her.

Sorry to hear that... My former therapist didn't do ERP right and we started with the most terrifying part of it (for context, I have contamination OCD) and it was traumatizing. But I went to another one, and we go step by step. If you can't handle the panic and anxiety of it, you'll start with just imagining scenarios and sometimes medication comes in handy at the beginning, if it's something you're confortable with. Please don't give up on therapy because of one therapist. It can be draining to find someone, but it's worth it to ease your mind.

@Anonymous22 I just cant seem to get over that barrier. I know logically I should just go deal. But the stubborn part of me is, not even willing. I'm currently taking 5HTP over the counter serotonin builder, but I'm afraid I'm gonna need something stronger. . And I just hate taking chemical pills. 😒 .. I totally appreciate your feedback. It is helpful to know I'm not totally alone.

@jemcu812 I can imagine and I absolutely don't judge. This is why OCD sucks. I also understand wanting to avoid pills if you can. They are helpful, but it's still an adjustment and they have pros and cons, like any medication. (I'm pro medication when it's too debilitating, but it's a personal choice) Maybe you can try one appointment without putting too much pressure on yourself, expose your situation and current limitations and mention your past experience and see if the therapist can help you and what they can offer. No strings attached, just check the menu and see if it could work for you (without it being too "easy" or enabling). (And of course if you're in a position to try, don't know how it works in your country, but where I got therapy, you can do "test sessions" that insurance covers)

@Anonymous22 You're being so helpful. I need to just lose my ego and just go, but my fear is. If it's a crappy connect, I'll be mad at myself for trying , then I'll obsess about that too. Arghhh.! I sounds so pathetic

@jemcu812 Don't be too hard on yourself and maybe if you feel less anxious in general or about it (of you're in a stressful phase right now or if winters are Generally harder for you) and try at a moment when you feel less resistant. Be patient with yourself, it's hard to control those thoughts and I hope you'll slowly open up more to the idea. It could be bad, but it could also be neutral or actually promising. You can't really now for now. I hope you'll manage to try 🙏

During ERP, we learn not to analyze thoughts, not to analyze feelings, obstacles, ideas, commands... because it's all an intrusion and not real. However, it's too difficult for me, because every time a picture comes out, it's all detailed and even with a sound in my head, or an urge, or an idea... to "leave" it like that and I don't come back... is that the case with anyone else? and does it ever pass? Thanks in advance

ERP helping people as opposed to turning them into the bad thing doesn't make sense to me. How is fixating on the uncomfortable thought not going to turn you into a criminal minds episode?

If your mind purposely keeps fetching a repetitive word, and you’re afraid it will never go away, is the ERP therapy to STOP the mind from doing it? Or ALLOW the mind to do it, and not react? Also, is repeating a word in your head a mental compulsion? Or would that be the obsession? So then what’s the compulsion? Posting on here? Lol
