Get a diagnosis. You’re not a doctor, you’re not a therapist. I understand it can be hard to find treatment but saying you have something that you might not have paints a picture in peoples’ minds of what OCD looks like that might not be accurate. This is only my opinion, but until there is a diagnosis I would say that you believe you have OCD or I’m pretty sure I have OCD.

@CFE Yea I think it’s very possible that you have ocd but I think it’s better for you to go about it like : “I think I might have ocd” or “I’m in the process of getting diagnosed with ocd”. It’s just better for yourself really

@J6 I’m not disagreeing, people have ocd before they get diagnosed.i said it’s better for yourself because there is a possibility that people think they have something and end up having another for example. Some disorders overlap symptoms and it can be a little tricky getting into all of that. I don’t think self diagnosing is inherently harmful, it’s just easier to say “I think I have so and so but I can’t get diagnosed” to other people so in case you eventually find out with a professional it was something else it’s easier to communicate to others afterwards. To avoid weird conversations just in case, it’s what I personally did. I think you misunderstood my point.

@J6 I get that. I’m not trying to invalidate your experience but that’s your own situation, it makes sense to you. It’s not the ideal situation that should be advised to someone else. it’s probably better for the person who asked the question to go lightly about it, if they ever need to explain to someone it’s probably best to explain it as it is. If they want to explain it shortly: “ I very probably have ocd “. there we go. If they end up getting diagnosed it’s all good and if they end up having other disorder it’s all good too. Not something they would have to explain again.

@J6 I think getting diagnosed is extremely important for every person with ocd. not only to have sure about what you are feeling but to get the treatment you need. That being working with an ERP therapist or starting medication if needed. ocd is a disorder that requires treatment, even for people who have mild ocd. It’s important to keep that in check make sure it doesn’t progress.

@J6 The validation is not the main reason why I’m saying it’s important, it’s the treatment and the medication people might need for the disorder, which requires the diagnosis. you tried looking for OCD specialists in your area?

@J6 The confidentiality thing is usually similar for minors in a lot of places. If it’s absolutely necessary they would have to share but probably letting you know exactly what. Still sucks tho. Personally I was really scared of that too when I was going through some self harm issues but it turned out okay. I worked through it with my therapist and at the end the information was never shared. Communication is important but I know how scary it can be

@J6 very valid! i knew with 100% certainty i had it when i came across the right article i balled my eyes out and i was right! nothing wrong with selfdiagnosis if it gets you help and piece of mind!

You need to schedule a consultation with a therapist or a psychiatrist and bring your concerns up.

I got diagnosed as part of my NOCD treatment. I had a 90 minute OCD assessment. Talking about your OCD thoughts is definitely terrifying. But it is also freeing. But a therapist who understands OCD has heard it all before. ERP is the best way to get your life back.

@Gert0872 Yes! I am now in recovery. I have more good days than bad days and a lot less intrusive thoughts. The ones I do I have I feel better equipped to deal with.

Infants can’t have OCD, but young children can. If you’re concerned about the symptoms and want professional help, the diagnosis does require you to tell the therapist what you’re experiencing (it does not have to be in extreme detail though.)

@J6 Yes, I’ve heard that too. By infants I meant babies, just to be clear.

So basically I didn’t know till my hocd started. But looking back at my life I had ocd since I was a kid. Like 6-7 years old. First time happening I remember that when I was doing stuff many times I had to say something like a little poem in my head to stop it. Then I had this thing were if I felt my left foot touch the floor 5 times I had to do the touch the floor with my right foot too. Then I had something I guess contamination??? Basically after washing my hands I had a sensation on my hand like I could still “feel” the germs and I had to wash them again. Then I started having thoughts of my family members getting hurt. I had intrusive thoughts about me hurting my dog. Then I had this obsession that a guy who used to be in my school is looking for me to beat me up. And how it’s this obsession about my sexuality even tho I never doubted or questioned it before. Is that possible??? Like can you be born with it? I’m pretty sure both my parents have it too. At least at some level. Take my father for example he had an obsession that he was going to die the moment he turned 30.

so. oh lord. half my ocd symptoms could be autism. (not that im looking for a triple diagnosis including adhd, its just interesting to explore) this little ol rabbit hole started with my friend, who happens to be autistic and passionate about how their own condition works, when they started slowly easing the convo into an autism screening and by the time i realized what he was doing it was “oh my god ur kinda right i might be wrong for denying all this time that i could have autism” always thought my experience with texture/sensory as a toddler (and now) was ocd, because thats mainly what made adults call me ocd, more blatant ocd signs aside (such as touching things “just right”, ordering items etc) wondered why i was like that when theres not even a *direct* link between ocd and sensory issues (not the same as somatic ocd) thought i just happen to be an extremely sensitive person since i was born, now realizing that couldve been a sign of autism, along side many more “quirks” ive always had anyone with autism and ocd that can tell me what their experience is like? what about when u were children? especially if u snuck under the radar until u were older, my parents have said only a few times in the moment that i remind them of an autistic kid but dont think i have it

Hi I’m currently undiagnosed but am so sick of the way I’m living that I’ve decided I seriously need to get help. I need advice on 1. How to tell my parents that I need help and 2. The process. The first part is hard because a couple years ago I talked to my mom about having OCD but she brushed it off and said “everyone has anxiety” so I just never brought it up again. I’m also a bit ashamed for some reason, I don’t know why, to bring it up to them and I feel scared. For the second part what’s the process of getting diagnosed and getting medication and therapy. Where do I get diagnosed and do I have to start therapy before getting medicated? Thanks so much for the help.
