@Anonymous Yes it literally hurts my head. Then I try not to suppress them & let them come through & then I feel like im thinking them on purpose. Itās a horrible cycle.

Yeah bc when Iām trying to suppress an intrusive thought I start listening to music and/or biting my skin, and try to loop a song over and over in my head. Thatās usually the indicator to me

I wish music helped me but what I normally listen to doesnāt help at all. It sucks.

@BetterWays Dang, I used to have that problem so can relate. Over the past few years especially, Iāve found a ton of incredible musicians who have similar mental problems and use music as a coping mechanism. So a lot of what they make is very soothing and distracting, because they know how it feels and really tap into that feeling of trying to suppress intrusive thoughts. It can be hit or Miss though, some of it is triggering because they express the feelings of mental illness a bit too well. But those songs can be skipped easily. I can give you recommendations if you want, no pressure though:))

@BetterWays My favorite artists are Brian Wilson, Daniel Johnston and Thom Yorke. Which is laughable to some extent because they are known for making depressing music. But the thing is, a lot of what people consider ādepressingā by them to me is simply realistic. They are so good at recreating certain feelings, such as anxiety, hyperactiveness, euphoria, depression, stuff like that. So it kind of has this reverse effect on me. When Iām anxious, I listen to an anxious song and it kind of cancels my feelings out. Obviously that doesnāt work for everyone, but in a sense, succumbing to the feeling and letting it naturally subside with the song is pretty effective. I hope any of this makes sense hahah Iām really passionate about music therapy and stuff. A song that hits really hard lately for me is How to Dissapear Completely. It sounds bad, but itās actually about how Thom, the singer, would repeat to himself āIām not here, this isnāt happeningā whenever he felt anxiety and it worked. So itās in a way uplifting. And he made another called āIdiotequeā thatās about the feeling of isolation. I listen to it a lot at night, itās become a habit now. Take this advice with caution, these songs could be triggering depending on the person. But personally, listening to music that matches how I feel exactly is a kind of magical experience that takes me out. It forces me to get through it, in a way. And my negative emotions end when the song ends.

Yes, for sure. But for me, Iām not suppressing the thought, Iām suppressing the urge to ruminate on it (my biggest compulsion). It sometimes makes my brain feel tingly and almost like there is something pulling at the back of my brain. It is the weirdest feeling. Also, I will emotionally feel like Iām really being irresponsible by not ruminating about it.

So I was enjoying some āme timeā and had intrusive thoughts, but it felt like just for a second I liked it. Like Iām holding myself back from āenjoyingā the thought. And the thoughts are related to things I was into when I was younger, but sometimes I feel like I might still like it even though 9/10 I wouldnāt give it a second thought. Is this common? Or is this just denial? Thanks

Iāve had many types of OCD, but I gained control over them over the years, but a new one has started to arise. Do yāall ever have scary thoughts about something you might do? Recently Iāll get extremely uncomfortable no matter where I am because I canāt stop thinking about āwhat if I screamed really loud in my lecture class tomorrow?ā And other stupid stuff like that. Also, this one is kind of funny, but sometimes when I use the bathroom I pause before because I think āwhat if Iām actually in class right now?ā I also cannot control the thoughts about past embarrassing moments. I know everyone does, but I will become visibly uncomfortable and harp on something from years ago. This happens all throughout the day. Also, does anyone else do things that resemble tics when you get these thoughts. Like when they happen Iāll curse under my breath or like jerk my head a little bit. When Iām in public I keep it low key but when Iām alone sometimes Iāll physically get up and pace or something when those thoughts happen. Just curious if anyone has had these experiences

Does anyone else find it hard to let go of an intrusive thought when you can find some irrelevant truth to it that feels relevant? Examples: **āYouāre attracted to *insert inappropriate person* (family member/child/animal)ā** āBut they are pretty/cute/adorableā¦ā **āYou think your bf is ugly.ā** āWell, his hair did look weird the other day and Iāve taken unflattering photos of him. He *could* be (more fit/better dressed/etc)ā¦ā **āWhat if I actually want bad things to happen to me for attention?ā** āWell, I have imagined people comforting me⦠and sometimes I do not mind when others check in on me.ā **āWhat if Iām actually a bad person deep down?ā** āWell, I have made mistakes before⦠and sometimes I do not immediately feel guilty.ā **āWhat if I secretly want to be with someone else?ā** āI have thought about what it would be like to date different people.ā **āYou wanted (family member/child/anyone else) to find you sexyā** āWell, I donāt want to be seen as ugly, and a compliment is flattering.ā āā Itās such a skillful distortion at times that I donāt even realize things are twisted, and I genuinely believe the thought, causing me to panic so intensely. Only later, I look back and have small epiphanies where I realize it wasnāt at all what I thought. Anyone else?
