Risperidone
Are any of you taking Risperidone for OCD? Does it help a lot? How do you feel after taking it?

Hi I take risperidone and it helps me
Nice! Did you have any bad side effects?
I heard it has bad side effects but works more for ocd than regular antidepressants
I'm quite worried about the side effect... Do you know anything else? What side effects does it cause?
@Anonymous I do agree That’s why my thoughts don’t match reality Makes sense I mean you can be ocd about loopy bs
I used to take it but am no longer doing so. In my experience, it does help calm down the anxiety and distress that the OCD causes, although it might not take away the intrusive thoughts initially. Overall, low doses can be really *really* good for stabilizing your mood, though. And also, since the OCD is often fuelled by distress, a med that takes away the distress can help slow down and get you out of the OCD cycle in the long run. You will typically want to take it at nighttime because it makes you really sleepy. Also, just throwing this out there because it's a relatively common issue with antipsychotics: if it makes you feel numb, sluggish, and emotionless like a zombie or something, you might wanna talk to your doctor about lowering the dose because a) you shouldn't have to be stuck feeling like that, and b) OCD usually only requires super low doses of antipsychotics anyway since the first line of treatment is the SSRIs. In any case, if you have negative side effects, that doesn't necessarily mean antipsychotics don't work for you--it could be a matter of the dosage or switching to a different med in the same class, such as aripiprazole (which actually has a unique and really cool mechanism of action due to being to only atypical antipsychotic that is a partial dopamine agonist rather than antagonist)
Thank you! That is all really helpful. I've already been taking SSRIs but my doctor also described me risperidone this time. Is 1mg a low enough dose of risperidone? I didn't get any instructions from my doctor as to what the dose should be, and now I can't contact her at all and I'm not sure what to do...
@M4ks No problem man. If it's alright to ask, what is the smallest size of the tablets? Generally it's best to start from the lowest possible dose and titrate up very slowly. Also, you might not even need very much at all since they usually only recommend low doses of antipsychotics for OCD. I actually was on 0.25 mg the entire time and it worked pretty well. Are there any instructions on the pill bottle? Also, maybe you could ask the pharmacist for advice when you pick it up. Depending on where you live, they might even be required to talk to you the first time you pick it up to inform you about the risks and answer any questions you have.
@Anonymous I've already bought them, I unfortunately got no instructions. The whole visit at my doctor's was quite a mess, I didn't even know she described me antipsychotics until after I bought them at the pharmacy. The smallest size is 1 mg but I think they can be cut in half. My doctor answered my texts today and told me to take a whole pill daily before going to sleep. I'm worried a 1 mg may be too much.
@M4ks Oh wow, that sounds pretty hectic, I'm so sorry... Do the 1 mg pills have a score line down the center? If not, it might not be advisable to cut it since unscored pills are often intended to be extended-release, and cutting it can cause it to be released too quickly and in an uneven dosage. I wish I could give better advice, but unfortunately I am not a medical professional... All I can say is that if it doesn't have a score line, you probably shouldn't split it without permission from the doctor or pharmacist. Probably best to do what the doctor said and then let them know right away if you have any side effects or other concerns.
I've been on fluoxetine but I've currently switched to sertraline. I've heard of risperidone so I'm just commenting to stay updated
I just got diagnosed with ocd and she suggested I think about taking lexapro for it. Has anybody tried that and does it help at all?
Hi everyone, I’m new to the community. I was diagnosed with OCD just a couple of months ago and have been doing some reading and other research to try and understand the disorder. With this, I have been actively seeing a great therapist who has been helpful to build tools to deal with my intrusive thoughts ( contamination OCD is my worst theme). Do help learn to deal with the compulsions, I start on Sertraline or “Zoloft” I believe since November 2024. Currently I’m on 50mg and have been doing this for just over a month. My question for those who are also taking Sertraline and it has been successful, how do you know it has really provided a benefit and how long did it take to get there? I sometimes feel the medication works, and sometimes I feel it doesn’t (maybe that’s my OCD trying to mess with things). Thanks!
So I have been diagnosed with GAD and OCD and my psychiatrist prescribed me with zoloft 🤔 but I dont know im really hesitant to start medication because im scared of the side effects and ik afraid of relying on a medication for a long time. Does anyone else take zoloft? What is it like? Any side effects?
