never google symptoms (rant)

i had these red spots on my leg and i made the mistake of googling it. now i’m terrified i have leukaemia. i went to the doctors and showed her a picture but i felt like she dismissed it quickly so it didn’t give me peace of mind. now i’m having the worst anxiety ever over it. i can’t focus, i have headaches, my knee has been hurting so much and my muscles feel tense. i know they can also be symptoms of anxiety but im scared it’s cancer and i’ve been failing classes because i can’t stop thinking about it. i constantly check the symptoms of leukaemia online and check if i have them. i’m trying to make another appointment with my doctor but she’s not the most caring doctor so i just feel annoying and crazy.

I’m going through health anxiety as well. I’ve convinced myself so much this year that I had some form of cancer; oral, skin, brain, and other types of cancer. I’m currently feeling like I have liver cirrhosis because my right part of abdomen hurts sometimes, but it’s most likely because I keep pressing on it to feel if it’s hard or for tumors, I’m sorry you’re going through this as well

I’m going through health anxiety as well. And I’m to the point of thinking i hope it is just anxiety and not something more serious. Where we differ is I’m to scared to go to the doctors. Like i know it would give me peace at mind but what if it doesn’t and she instead tells me what i fear the most. My fears have alternated the last few days. It started with a uti that lead me to believe i had a kidney infection. I was convinced my urine had blood in it so i drank a ton of water to convince myself otherwise. Then it turned into fear of having a seizure (we are still at this point just more elevated now). My latest obsession is fear of having a brain tumor that is cancerous and that is why I’m scared of seizing. And my mind keeps playing tricks on me such as head pains, blurry vision, etc. and i say it’s my mind playing tricks but what if it’s not? This has definitely been the hardest to deal with thus far and complete agree googling symptoms made me feel 100x worse and now I’m in a rabbit hole.

@Anon17 im very sorry you’re going through this. for me going to the doctor is also scary but i keep fearing that if i don’t find out now, i’ll find out when it’s so too late. idk if that makes sense.

@sourpatchkid It makes total sense to find out now then when it’s too late. It’s just my worst fear is having something wrong with me and to have a doctor potentially tell me that is beyond scary.

Oh my goodness, never Google anything. Almost every time, it will say cancer or tumour or something of that nature. I too battle health anxiety, freaking out that I might have some type of cancer - oral, skin, brain, bowel, lymphoma. Any type of sensation, pain, discomfort gets my mind in a twist. I know how hard it is, I really do. It feels soooo real and it’s like you end up questioning whether it’s anxiety or gut instinct. It consumes you. You want answers and you want them now. You want someone to assure you are totally fine.

@divyD For me, the health anxiety expanded to my husband and now my infant son. It started because I freaked out after reading an article about a rare health condition. I googled and googled. I have spent the past 9 months with my ocd forcing me to constantly check my son for symptoms of this condition. I’d go hours on end inspecting his body and its so hard because he (his body) is sometimes one of my triggers. It’s worse than if it were about me, believe me, it’s so shit. Point is… don’t Google!! Since you’re unhappy with your dr, I’d suggest getting a second opinion. This is totally normal, acceptable thing to do. If you had to go back to the same dr, be clear you have anxiety and need her compassion to revisit and resolve these dots. But you have to be prepared to accept the answer of the professional and not Google anymore. Googling is a compulsion too I think.

@divyD thank you so much i will definitely try to get a second opinion and speak to my doctor about my anxiety. im so sorry that you’ve been struggling with that too. it’s so hard to fight the urge to google symptoms but i will never do it again.

@divyD i cannot thank you enough! this community has honestly been so helpful. i did get a second opinion and it was nothing to worry about ! unfortunately, my ocd has attached itself to something else but i’m trying really hard not to google symptoms.

How do I stop worrying about illnesses? For some reason I’ve been stuck on a kick where I’m constantly worrying about getting cancer and I am always googling symptoms of various cancers. I read that leukemia can cause a rash and I thought about it so much I have a stress rash now (which obviously makes me worry I have leukemia). I’ve had fatigue and headaches from pcos for years but I’m convincing myself it’s bc of cancer. It started bc I had pain in my armpit for a couple days and it went straight to me stressing about breast cancer. The pain resided after a few days but I’m pretty sure I have a phantom pain every once in a while bc it’s all I can think about. Any tips?

I have had anxiety issues for years and have been in therapy for that. But a big change in my life made it spin out of control. Btw, I am a bit of a control freak. So, for the last year, health anxiety has reigned. It all started when I had a panick attack and ran out of the operation room where I had to go under for a very simple, preventive procedure (I was convinced I wasn’t going to wake up.) I faced it again and made it. But after that I have been going from one health scare to the other. Skin cancer, oral cancer, breats cancer, HPV related cervical cancer - went through each recently. These are accompanied by panick attacks, insomnia and anxiously googling symptoms and testimonials. Every visit to the doctor end with panick that I forgot to check other important symptoms or that she might not be taking me seriously and miss something important. Now I am worried about a lymph node under my jaw that is slightly swollen. I know chances are it is ok and it is not cancer, it’s my anxiety. But what if it isn’t? And on it goes. I just want to stop worrying and go a day without googling symptoms or health issues. I am waiting for it to pass as these periods of health anxiety are kinda like panicks attacks - they build up, they peak and then they pass. I am afraid doctors will stop taking me seriously (this week I saw my doctor for a melanoma scare and a sore breast.) I am afraid when my doctor doesn’t investigate further and I am afraid when she does. I know it is absurd (I recently googled eye cancer) but I can’t stop. Sorry for the long post, I guess I wanted to write it all down and share it.

Made the mistake of googling 😩😩 help me please.

I just can’t help it. And you would think I’d be able to stop considering how much worse it makes me feel. I have Pains that come and go in my head. They are not stabbing that are just there. Sometimes they last all days sometimes they last 1 second and come and go throughout the day. The last few days oven been scared of brain tumors. So i looked it up again. And it says less than 1% of population develop cancerous tumors. However then i got reading about aneurysms. And it says that most people die within the first 25 minutes after a ruptured aneurysm. What the heck?!! What if i secretly have one? It says that aneurysm headaches are stabbing worst pain you could ever feel which my headaches are not. But what if i secretly have an aneurysm. It says they are caused by High blood pressure. Which i tend to have every time i go to Doctors ( i thought it was nerves, anxiety, being obese). What if i just wake up i. The middle of a night with a headache that brings me to my knees and it’s a ruptured aneurysm?? I’m more scared about this than a brain tumor. What am i doing to myself? Please help 😭😭😭
