Has anyone come to the conclusion that your parents also have OCD? My father is showing real signs, but he’s in his 70s and kind of blows off the notion of having it. I’ve seen different opinions on if it’s hereditary. Any thoughts?
My dad (may he RIP) would read the same Bible verse every morning before going outside. When asked why he read the same verse? He’d answered, I have to & wouldn’t go into it any further. At the time I never thought of it as ocd. Who knew?
Mental health issues run in my family. I'm of Mexican descent and I found out that my great grandpa was hospitalized in Mexico during the 1950s because of "extreme anxiety" that didn't allow him eat, sleep, work or function in daily life. I'm pretty sure we've all passed it off as anxiety in the family, but after my diagnosis things make sense
I’ve been struggling with OCD all my life. Just recently I’ve been having a really hard time and I opened up to my whole family about it. Ends up both my parents and my brother have OCD tendencies, and my brother struggles with it badly. I think it’s hereditary for sure, but also slightly a product of your environment.
I always wonder if other people have ocd but I think that’s part of my ocd checking others behaviours idk I hope no one in my family is goi bc through this hell because it’s torture, I worry about others a lot

@Michael1237 I’ve had good luck with my parents (in their 60s). I’ve just told them my diagnosis and my symptoms and they realized they do the same things. They didn’t know it was OCD, they thought it was normal. I’d try to just share your themes with examples and maybe it’ll resonate with them.
@Michael1237 When it comes to your mental health, you’re number one. Everyone else is secondary. If your parent is a source of stress-may I suggest to take a nonjudgmental approach with him & yourself. They’d have to want to learn. If not, you’ll be stressing yourself out. Like the saying goes, ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’. Otherwise just be there for them. There’s more to this but I think you understand the point I’m trying to convey. All the best to you!!!
@Dee C My parents are aware of my OCD. I don’t often tell them when I’m struggling. My dad has OCD, not to extent as me. I help out my parents.
@Matthew L. My dad (may he RIP) used to read, out loud, the same Bible verse every morning b4 going to work. And on the way home he’d pick up groceries having 3 items. We didn’t know then that it was ocd. I gotta say, what I wouldn’t give to hear him recite those verses. Enjoy the quality time with your dad & family. Stay well!
@Dee C My dad used to ask me for reassurance when I was young, before I was diagnosed with OCD. Now I have it. I help him a lot. Great full he’s around.

My father is in his 70’s and has had OCD for years. I notice certain things he does, however his is not as bad as mine. He seems to enjoy things, but tells me he has thoughts.
Have you ever felt the need to hide knives because you’re scared someone might hurt you while you’re sleeping? Or have your thoughts ever tried to convince you that you have feelings for your family members? Maybe you feel like you need to tell your parents to “drive safe” every time they go somewhere, believing that it will prevent them from crashing, or that something bad will happen if you don’t. These are things I’ve experienced, but they didn’t last long, and because of that, I’m unsure if I actually have OCD, as these thoughts don’t happen frequently. I’m 17, so maybe it’s still developing, but I’m not sure. At one point, I even thought I might be a psychopath and would become a serial killer (i was analyzing my past and feelings but it went away quickly) When I was a kid, I was also scared I had a tumor and constantly needed reassurance from my parents that everything is okay, but it wasn’t as intense. Recently, I’ve been scared that ghosts would come or that a demon would possess me, or that if i open my eyes i will se my dead uncle (i was 16😂) which kept me from sleeping. Are these signs of OCD? Should I consider getting treatment? About three months ago, I had my first big obsession about possibly having OCD itself (i was scared of going crazy, of feeling like this forever, of not being perfect, of not having control), and now I’ve been struggling with HOCD for three months. But I’m scared that I don’t even have OCD, and that these thoughts might be true. It’s funny because just a few months ago, I was terrified of having OCD, but now I feel like I want to have it. I think a traumatic experience with weed might have made my OCD worse, but I’m not sure. What do you think? I also found out that my mom is also hiding knifes and that she was also obsession over sickness…
so, i’ve been thinking i have ocd, but my dad said that adhd is really bad in my family, so could it be adhd instead of ocd?
So basically I didn’t know till my hocd started. But looking back at my life I had ocd since I was a kid. Like 6-7 years old. First time happening I remember that when I was doing stuff many times I had to say something like a little poem in my head to stop it. Then I had this thing were if I felt my left foot touch the floor 5 times I had to do the touch the floor with my right foot too. Then I had something I guess contamination??? Basically after washing my hands I had a sensation on my hand like I could still “feel” the germs and I had to wash them again. Then I started having thoughts of my family members getting hurt. I had intrusive thoughts about me hurting my dog. Then I had this obsession that a guy who used to be in my school is looking for me to beat me up. And how it’s this obsession about my sexuality even tho I never doubted or questioned it before. Is that possible??? Like can you be born with it? I’m pretty sure both my parents have it too. At least at some level. Take my father for example he had an obsession that he was going to die the moment he turned 30.
