Someone official asked my diagnosis today. I told him OCD but officially it is schizophrenia. They also said “but something normal right?” Lol. My diagnosis is sort of in the air atm but I wasn’t honest. My doctor thinks I have OCD and I have had almost every theme since childhood. Are white lies OK? I’m not sure I had to tell him anything tbf and he probably shouldn’t have been asking.
A lot of doctors ask about my mental health even if it has nothing to do with their field. They just want to see the whole picture. You could have said something like, "Well, I was diagnosed with schizophrenia; however, I really think I have OCD and would like to get reevaluated." If you say something like this then you're not lying. "White lies" are a slippery slope because if you tell enough of them, your brain actually starts to believe them and then that can lead to pathological lying.

@Newb82 - Red flag. There is no reason why a financial advisor needs to know your mental health condition. Also, his "normal" comment was insensitive, and it clearly shows that he is unprofessional and lacks education and empathy on how to interact with others.
@Anonymous I have to speak to another lady sort of from the same company. She knows my situation and is happy to work with me. I’m making a few important decisions at the moment so you sort of have to be strict with the rules without being OCD. Obviously big decisions mean big doubts too.

I think I have schizophrenia too because few years ago I used to hear a voice witch thought it was God and it was controlling me but now I'm still hearing that voice but it doesn't control me. I was also diagnosed with ocd and that voice is similar to OCD thoughts
@Madjid I think my SZ was OCD all along. I don’t hallucinate or hear voices.
Of course now I think I am going to become a degenerate because I told lies. Like I think it is a slippery slope from now on.
@Newb82 I think it is important for a doctor, psychiatrist, therapist to know your diagnosis. But anyone else I think that is up to you on whether you want to share something that personal, & also whether the person is someone you are comfortable knowing this info about you. Human Resources at my job knows that I have intermittent FMLA at work due to mental health, so that I can attend appts & such if I can’t get them to be after working hours. At work, HR is the only person who you would need to tell that to if you needed something like an FMLA. No one else.

@Newb82 Family medical leave act, I believe. As long as you have worked for a company for a year you qualify to apply for fmla. I use it on an intermittent basis, only for mental health reasons wich for me is appointments that I may not be able to make for after work hours. Fmla legally protects me from being fired for missing over the allowable amount of time off work according to my workplace. So it is a protection to keep your job while you are getting help for your problems. Could be medical or mental health. I was embarrassed to talk to HR at first since it was specially for my mental health. I was afraid they would fire me for even saying I had mental health problems. They have been great though & only Hr has to be told what the reason for a FMLA is.

@Amandaarene Schizophrenia is a diagnosis I’ve had since 2007. My doctor thinks I was misdiagnosed. I’ve done my research and I’m sure I have OCD. I’ve been waiting since last year for a follow up appointment for an update on that.

Lemme explain, so quite often if I’m retelling something that happened I will lie about random details because I constantly think that if whatever I’m saying isn’t interesting enough or if it makes me seem like a bad person then the listener will absolutely hate me or think I’m boring and not want to talk to me anymore. I don’t know if that could potentially be based on ocd or if maybe it’s more like pathological lying ? Sometimes I’ll even take it as far as repetitively memorizing the lie details to the point where I actually feel like I remember it happening that way (like I almost gaslight myself into believing my own lies if that makes sense?)
ocd makes lying SO hard for me. i get stuck on it and feel ridiculously guilty even when it’s nothing important. i was supposed to go to a birthday party thing tmrw for a bunch of people im not really close with, but my one close-ish friend is going so i had originally planned on it and told everyone yes. however im very introverted and i planned on canceling deep down because i just don’t know how to say no. i considered MAYBE going if i felt up to it but i really don’t now that its tomorrow. its also an hour drive and i don’t feel im up to that. i just texted my friends and my closer friend and pretended im sick with a fever as an excuse not to go. im so anxious over it now because i hate cancelling things last minute and i hate lying. ocd makes it impossible and i feel like the worst person even when its the lightest lies!!! i just wanna chill day LOL but i feel im going to be worrying about whether they hate me now or not
Ok, so first of all, I’m undiagnosed. However, I’ve been pretty certain for a while now that what I’ve been struggling with is OCD. My problem though is that it’s not easy to get diagnosed, and in some cases, it would require me to pay money. It frustrates me that I have to pay to deal with my mental health. Is it worth it for me to get diagnosed? I know I don’t need a diagnosis to start healing and working on these things, but I also don’t want to be “self diagnosing” the problem, because that makes me feel like a liar and an imposter. My other problem is that I fear my family doctor won’t properly diagnose me. I came to him about mental health related issues once before, and he read off a very generic list of mental health symptoms. when he got to what sounded like the ‘OCD’ section, we asked one or two very generic questions that had nothing to do with my themes, and since I couldn’t relate, I just answered no to them. He then told me I was fine, that I was just a “type A personality”, and that I was just being too hard on myself. I fear that my doctor might not be very knowledgeable or up to date on current information regarding OCD, and this might make it increasingly difficult for me to get diagnosed. Another problem is my symptoms seem to come and go. I often have an obsessive cycle that can last months at a time, and then it just goes away. Sometimes I won’t experience any symptoms for years. This makes me feel like I don’t actually have OCD or that it’s not ‘bad’ enough to be diagnosable.
