Medications for OCD

I’m curious to hear what medications have worked for those with OCD. I’m newly diagnosed. I had been in Lexapro, which was not helpful. Then I tried Luvox for a month and had insomnia and restlessness/twitchy. Now I’m trying Zoloft. I know it can be hard to find the right fit and all of these meds come with side effects. Starting to feel discouraged. Would appreciate hearing what worked and what didn’t as we are all in this together and I’m a newbie to the group. Thanks! 🙏🏻

I actually take Ashwaghandha … I know it’s a natural remedy but it has helped me tremendously. I also heard milk thistle is good for OCD

@Anonymous Interesting! I have a tea with ashwaghanda. I hadn’t heard that about milk thistle. Thanks for the tips. Do you take in tea form?

Everyone is different! Ive taken some medications that have worked great for other people but dont work for me. Right now I’m taking luvox and just started less than a week ago. But- my psychiatrist ran a whole vitamin panel on me by using a blood test and she said that with proper supplements of my low vitamins a may also feel better physically which helps mentally- you could try that!

@hiitsemmy Running a vitamin panel is an interesting idea. I will have to ask - it doesn’t strike me as a thing psychiatrists would order. Def have to ask. Thanks!

I take CBD oil (THC removed) and 18 grams of inositol daily to help with my OCD. While I still have intrusive thoughts, my "spikes" or rush of anxiety is not near as bad so I can forget about/let stuff go much easier on it. There has been a study done on the effects of inositol on OCD: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9169302/

@BridgeS I have taken CBD oil but didn’t notice a major difference with anxiety but I was taking a small dose I think. Interesting about the inositol- I know that helps with PCOS, didn’t know about ocd. Thanks for sharing.

Zoloft helped me a lot but I made the mistake of cycling off and when I tried it again it didn’t work so well. I’m about to start Fluoxetine and I hope it works well. 🤞

I just started fluvoxamine (Luvox) about a week ago and I’m really liking it so far. Ever since starting it I’ve had peaceful nights and mornings..which is a great step for me. Only side effect I’ve had is the occasional head ache. I’m excited to see how much I improve as the weeks progress. Lexapro was great for me for many years..other than the weight gain. But I was able to combat that with diet and exercise. It eventually quit working even after an increase in dosage. Zoloft was a nightmare. I tried it for three months and had zero relief. The insomnia and increased anxiety was unbearable. Everyone is different. I hope you find what works for you. I’m sure you will!!

@Tee10 I hope Luvox works for you. I also had weight gain with Lexapro and still struggling to get the weight off. Hopefully Zoloft works for me and I don’t continue with insomnia. It’s crazy the side effects can be the same as what the medication is intended to help with!

@Anonymous I had to be pretty strict with the dieting for a while, and worked out nearly everyday to get the weight off. Wasn’t easy. & I know! My anxiety got even worse with the Zoloft! I had to take Klonopin some nights to offset it, which helped with the insomnia too. But obviously that’s not a good solution longterm.

Looking for insight on OCD/depression medications

(25f) Before I was diagnosed with OCD I tried Lexapro (wasn’t bad but wasn’t great) and Citalopram (partially think it was a part of what caused me to develop severe anxiety that ignited my once not so active OCD.) After diagnosis tried Effexor and didn’t see an improvement. Was on Adderall for a good amount of my life and mentally did good on it, stopped about 2 years ago because the physical side effects started to become more noticeable. Maybe I go back on Adderall? Maybe SSRI’s and I aren’t a great fit? Anyone taking other medications that helped?

New diagnosis

I just got diagnosed with ocd and she suggested I think about taking lexapro for it. Has anybody tried that and does it help at all?

OCD and Zoloft (Sertraline)

Hi everyone, I’m new to the community. I was diagnosed with OCD just a couple of months ago and have been doing some reading and other research to try and understand the disorder. With this, I have been actively seeing a great therapist who has been helpful to build tools to deal with my intrusive thoughts ( contamination OCD is my worst theme). Do help learn to deal with the compulsions, I start on Sertraline or “Zoloft” I believe since November 2024. Currently I’m on 50mg and have been doing this for just over a month. My question for those who are also taking Sertraline and it has been successful, how do you know it has really provided a benefit and how long did it take to get there? I sometimes feel the medication works, and sometimes I feel it doesn’t (maybe that’s my OCD trying to mess with things). Thanks!
