I think this is a great talk, and I really appreciate Howie Mandel. At the same time, I wish there was more public discussion about taboo ocd themes. Obviously talking about something like POCD on live television may be too triggering and the world might not be ready for it; it may be met very unkindly by people who don’t understand. But if the more taboo themes could enter the general mental health discussion somehow, I and countless others might not have had to go so many years feeling terrified to seek treatment or tell anybody.

@mothmanda I agree. I have bathroom OCD as part of my contamination subtype. However, hand washing and cleaning, along with symmetry get mentioned most. Guess it would be taboo to talk about the bathroom.

@mothmanda People who don’t have the condition constantly see OCD as either symmetry or health, and often see only compulsions as the issue, whereas I personally consider the thoughts I’m dealing with a lot more problematic than the compulsions… It a bit frustrating that people can’t really see that 😅 still good that it’s being talked about tho!

@yoyo22 Yes, obsessions, thinking about things, is difficult. Right, symmetry and heath, along with contamination, aren’t the only subtypes. People have misconceptions about OCD, but at least it’s talked about.

@mothmanda Agreed! I get so aggravated by the misconceptions about OCD yet it’s hard to correct them when most of my OCD symptoms/presentations are really disturbing and I don’t want people to ask about them.

@yoyo22 The compulsions can fuel the thoughts which makes you worse

@mothmanda I completely, completely agree. If I didn’t find NOCD. I probably would’ve continued believing that I was a freak, and horrible thoughts and hating myself

@Anonymous Relatable :( I hope that you’re doing well. I know ocd isn’t curable at the moment but I hope that you’re getting the treatment you need! Have a good day!!

That’s good to hear that a comedian opens up about his OCD. I’ve been labeled stuck-up, too serious, a Debby-downer, and unable to chill the f out because I have OCD. So I’m unable to experience humor just because of my condition, as others put it. But after seeing this, it brings me hope.

@Josean I wonder what other symptoms he has, other than not having contact, physically, or worrying about contamination? He seems to not be worried about what he’s saying to the public.

@Josean I was always looked at as being too literal serious, uptight, etc. I never knew or understood where that came from. Now that I’m reading you’ve had the same experience, I’m hopeful that can change with the help of therapy.

The more we destigmatize OCD, the more we normalize how debilitating it is and that there is evidence-based treatment that will help!

I appreciate the dialogue in this video. I think the NOCD creator and Howie do a great job in conveying the seriousness of this. However, I think Cheddar could have done a better job with the descriptions of symptoms on those brief bulleted slides. They are strictly referring to contamination OCD and miss dozens of other symptoms related to the other OCD subtypes. IMO that further spreads limited information to the point where someone like myself who had other subtypes of OCD still wouldn’t consider themselves OCD based on the list. My OCD symptoms include things like rumination, skin picking, writing lists, and other things completely unrelated to “fear of germs” and whatever else they wrote.

I wish more taboo and less cliche ocd was being put into the public eye Feel like this is the lighter side of ocd (obv it’s not fun I’ve had contamination) but compared to taboo and things like false memory that have huge amounts of shame which cause people another level of suffering Also it reinforces people’s instant belief that ocd is hand washing. that needs to be broken it’s so much more than that and there’s so many people suffering in the dark.

I have never heard that untreated OCD increases risk of suicide. With that said it is important that people identify the resources available to them, like therapy, medication , support groups, books …. There are more resources available than ever before. OCD does not have to define our lives .

@Anonymous Healing is possible.. I believe it, as I’ve been hospitalized twice for attempted suicide. One time I tried to lit myself on fire and another time I cut my wrists. Wounds were superficial so I made it.

@NevadaCowboy My heart goes out to you ❤️🩹. My comments never meant to minimize those that had attempted suicide or struggle with depression. My hope is that all , like myself, that are struggling with any type of mental health diagnosis find the support they need. Through counseling, support groups, reading materials etc.

@Anonymous Healing is possible.. No worries, you’re not minimizing anything. I’ve dealt with truly awful people who tell me I should kill myself, one of them is my brother. He’s been encouraging me to kill myself. But I’ve cut ties with him. I don’t want to talk to him.

I'm so grateful for this platform. I truly don't know where I'd be without NOCD. I gave a years worth of treatment left here and I pray I can strengthen my tools so that when I'm faced with ocd out of the blue, I know how to handle not seeking reassurance and don't have to live my life in fear. I feel my ocd is making my have ocd about remembering my tools. Because I remember these two metaphors I learned earlier on in my recovery but I can't remember how to apply them to my ocd and even that bothers me. I really hope NOCD can continue to work with insurance programs and not just top tier insurance plans because I have a insurance NOCD accepts but my specific plan isn't accepted and with inflation continuing to rise...paying out of pocket can be hard. So I'm grateful there are wonderful people like Mr. Stephen Smith in this program that continue to make NOCD more accessible for others, even others like myself who struggle getting the right insurance plan. Thank you NOCD. Thank you for being a light to us.

I'm not sure about him being a 'rep', he recently took part in the shaming of a young woman with depression and outing of her suicidal thoughts on his show. Opening the app and seeing him just makes me think of that and how I'd feel in her situation.
