You aren't a guinea pig and I think often times when we talk to a doctor we think they know everything but just from bad experiences with a few psychiatrists that naive worldview has been crushed for me, aha. I know it is controversial to be against meds but I do think they shouldn't be used if your OCD is not severe. ERP will do more for you than any pill. I'm not a doctor and this is purely my opinion. Either way do always stay critical, antidepressants do work for some people so it might give you a little boost, but if you find that it doesn't work out for you after idk, usually 8 weeks it should take a hold I guess, and you get worse and worse and worse, don't keep going with it for months like I did.

I got a bad skin rash from chlomipramine and fluvoxamine had no effect for me. My doctor, after trying a bunch of SSRIs, decided to try Aripiprazol, an antipsychotic. It's not used to treat ocd, it's used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder but it works against my anxiety... Idk

Fluvoxamine worked well for me. I’m not on it now, but only because I go through a cycle of feeling better, thinking I have control, getting off meds then eventually getting back on when things get worse. But Luvox is always something I know I can have as a good option.

Nope but sertraline was a disaster for me personally. They actually made me suicidal/depressed when I was not. I started those at age 18 though and the younger you are, the more at risk of those types of thoughts as a result of antidepressants I've been told. Hope you find something what works, personally after trying 3 different type of antidepressants and always getting suicidal on them when I was not naturally, I've realised it's not for me. These are all personal decisions though and you should feel free to try it out if you did not react as heavily. I'm not a doctor but from what I've heard the more SSRIs you have tried the lower the chance the next one works.

Thanks for the feedback guys/gals ? I need something that will target the intrusive thoughts and not a basic antidepressant that kind of deals with ocd too on the side, you know? I read that the side effects of Fluvoxamine could include some pretty nasty stuff like irregular heartbeat, but i suppose that they could just be covering their ass. I'll discuss it with my doc tomorrow.

Honestly all of them can have potential nasty side effects, but that's with any type of medicine ever. I don't think there is a specific "best" type of antidepressant against OCD, there is a list of approved ones by the FDA I think it was called? It is a pretty short list from what I can recall. I personally wouldn't do off label prescribed stuff, too little research into it imo and the things I had prescribed off label weren't helpful at all (antipsychotic seroquel in my case). I dunno, be careful with meds, and do not get forced into something you do not want.

I am wanting to go to therapy to hopefully lower my OCD symptoms but I am terrified to tell anyone else, like a therapist, about my intrusive thoughts. Has anyone else had this experience and if so how did you get over it?

Hey friends, I hope you all are well. I just wanted to check in and ask people's experiences about being on medication. I have had OCD pretty much my whole life, just got recently diagnosed 4 months ago and my therapist recommended that I get on meds for it so I have a psychiatrist appointment set up. I'm a little apprehensive about getting on them, but I've realized that I do have some sort of chemical imbalance in my brain that plays a part in my OCD and anxiety. I would love to hear anyones experiences or words of encouragement. Thank you, I hope you all are well.

Medication for OCD? Hello all, 19 male here, this seems like a cool community that isn’t nearly as triggering as reddit. I have pretty severe bouts of existential thinking or fear of going crazy ( psychosis ) after some pretty heavy mushroom trips a few years ago, I know logically I should be fine but I do know what it’s like to lose it and it’s scary. Currently I deal with relationship focused OCD, it’s all day from before I even open my eyes. I want things to work out with my girlfriend badly. Also I can come close to a panic attack sometimes which perpetuates everything. Anyway, I mention the fear of going crazy because the way my anxiety/derealization makes me feel is that I’m not mentally stable cause I feel out of it or unreal. I saw that a lot of anxiety and depression medication can cause psychosis and I feel like I could use some help in getting ahead of my OCD because the compulsions are had not to give into when I’m in such distress/not knowing. Plus overall I just feel like I have no idea how I feel about close to anything. Anyone relate about that ?
