Does anyone else believe there is a tie between toxic overbearing mothers and OCD?? Ive had some therapists tell me this in the past. I love my mother but she is insane and gives me so much anxiety. If I am around her for more than 10 minutes my brain and obsessions start spiraling. Its great because I live with her 🫠
I definitely think it’s both genetic predisposition AND your environment. Definitely think having a traumatic childhood or a parent that holds you to high standards can make OCD more anxiety-provoking and debilitating because of the reinforcement that others are feeding it
i relate. my mother was just like this. i believe she had a lot to do with my OCD developing as a child. she would always tell me my intrusive thoughts are demons trying to get in my head. def made me spiral. sorry youre dealing with that

@🐾 JackalDog 🐾 Omg thats terrible 😢 i can understand how that would make you spiral. Mine would and still does laugh at me about it or call me crazy. She also purposely does things she knows will upset me and make me spiral.
I never thought of that but would make sense for me. I dont talk to mine anymore.

I actually think my OCD wasn’t quite as bad or debilitating because my parents were pretty emotionally safe for me to be around. But when I moved out and was around/relying on more toxic people suddenly it got soo much worse.
@fruitbat42069 But that kinda proves my point too. OCD is so much worse if you are around toxic people, now imagine the toxic person is the person that raised you.

I can’t help but slightly blame my family for my lack of mental health. I have a mother that is a good person but cares so much about appearances that I now have anxiety over any imperfections. My dad yelled at me and my brother so much that my first reaction to anything is anger. And my dad literally always talks about how amazing my brother is. I was telling him how my boyfriend helped me out a lot by teaching me how to study and he then proceeded to name how much smarter my brother is. None of this pertains to OCD necessarily but it caused me to spiral. Usually that means cleaning but my house is cleaning so I’m just obsessing over how literally everyone but my mother thinks my brother is better. I love him very much. But part of me thinks that if he wasn’t here, my life would be better. My Pure O is more of the problem than OCD. There are no compulsions. Just obsessed with the idea that my brother will always be better than me. No matter what. It’s stupid but I just want to be a priority to someone other than my boyfriend or Jesus. I want someone in my family to understand my struggle with various mental illnesses and with always coming in second to my brother.
I don’t really talk about my mental health with my family because they make me feel like shit. Sometimes when I have anxiety attacks at home they accuse me of wanting to be sick. For example, I get really anxious about having a heart attack and then they interrogate me and say that I want it to happen even though I don’t. Is this a toxic response? They get mad whenever I’m anxious and I’ve told them this and they say that I’m selfish. Also when I had schiz OCD they said I wanted to go crazy.
Has anyone else been in a toxic relationship or suffered from narcissistic emotional abuse and your OCD got so much worse?
