Medications
What medications have you found most helpful for your intrusive ocd thoughts? I was put on a handful of different ones and I was just curious what has worked for other people.

I have mentioned this a few times on this forum as it comes up now and then . Asking physician for a prescription for a DNA mouth swab test can be helpful, it checks your specific genetic makeup with many different medications for compatibility and adverse reaction factors, interactions.
@777Q That’s smart that could help with getting the correct medication instead of constantly doing the trial and error thing.
@In the twilight zone That is what I found out personally, I did the test 10 years ago, it is once and done since DNA doesn’t change. The test was helpful for me.
@777Q Thank for sharing what is the name of the test ? And how do you get it done?
@In the twilight zone My physician wrote a prescription for me and the laboratory was Gene Sight . They tested for the following types of medications: pain , sleep , antidepressants and others . With my personal test I discovered that I am not compatible with approximately 85 to 90% of the medications due to a genetic issue . And for me looking back in hindsight it was accurate because I had negative issues with those medications beforehand way in advance of the genetic testing.
@777Q It’s cool that they have something like that out
Luvox 200mg .5 Klonopin for emergencies, the benzos can be a slippery slope so I try to limit those to emergencies
@Anonymous I feel like Xanax helps me a little better than hydroxizine but providers are hesitant to prescribe it to me…I’ve been on it before…wonder why Luvox wasn’t a consideration for me
@Booklover19 Tottaly, the only benzos that I can get prescribed are very low does and long acting. I understand tho, they can become addictive quickly. Luvox has helped a good amount, maybe work asking your doctor about.
@Anonymous I have an appointment on Monday so I’ll mention it
@Booklover19 Worth a shot! How is the trazedone?
@Anonymous It helps me sleep for the most part which is what it’s prescribed for…I think the naltrexone, namenda, and Prozac are meant to help with the thoughts but I’m wondering if Luvox or anafranil would be better for me….even Zoloft I was on it a while ago at 300 mg max dose and I feel like it helped for a while
@Booklover19 Crazy how we have to mix all these chemicals just to have normal brains lol
@Anonymous Yeah and mine doesn’t even feel normal yet
@Anonymous Same here
@Anonymous Agreed
@Booklover19 I was told that Luvox is the top-tier medication for OCD and it is approved by the FDA
Lexapro and lorazepam
@drejones1994 Been on Lexapro worked for a little How is your meds working for you?
@In the twilight zone Good I just think I need to up my dose a little but the lorazepam helps a lot
@drejones1994 Glad to hear that you have been getting some sort of relief. Any type of relief is better than no relief when dealing with OCD.
@In the twilight zone Yes
@drejones1994 Glad to hear that
Just started Luvox 100mg and kolopin 1mg so far the kolopin has been helping with the anxiety and slowing down the thoughts
@In the twilight zone How did the Luvox go? I started Prozac 3 weeks ago and haven’t seen a difference.
I have to see how the Luvox works
@In the twilight zone I was put on Prozac, abilify, naltrexone, namenda, lamotrigine, trazedone for sleep so yeah I’m on a lot
I've been on Luvox since August last year. Unfortunately I don't tolerate over 100mgs so it's not enough to control my OCD. I need to switch again but it's such a pain to go through so I've stayed on it for now.
@Booklover19 That is a lot
@Ablah I’m sorry to hear that. I hope some type of way they can work something out by adding another medication that could possibly help.
@Ablah And I really hope you feel better
(25f) Before I was diagnosed with OCD I tried Lexapro (wasn’t bad but wasn’t great) and Citalopram (partially think it was a part of what caused me to develop severe anxiety that ignited my once not so active OCD.) After diagnosis tried Effexor and didn’t see an improvement. Was on Adderall for a good amount of my life and mentally did good on it, stopped about 2 years ago because the physical side effects started to become more noticeable. Maybe I go back on Adderall? Maybe SSRI’s and I aren’t a great fit? Anyone taking other medications that helped?
Hiii - hope everyone is having a good day! Has anyone found any type of medication or supplements helpful with thinking sooo deeply about everything and intrusive thoughts? I’m in therapy + doing erp but my brain in this relapse of ocd just thinks sooo deep into my brain and i can’t seem to not to do it pull myself out. Like I’m just paranoid. An example would be if i simply look at my arm I’ll think so deeply about it like what’s under my arm what’s it look like inside etc. but if anyone not in this cycle looks at their arm they’ll be like hmm ok cool my arm and move on w their day. Just looking to see if anyone has had a similar experience of what I’m feeling rn.
I understand that everyone is different but lately I have been debating on medication just because of past experiences but does anyone have any good experiences with medication that has helped them with their OCD as well as therapy or treatment? As of now I’m dealing with it by myself but it feels like it may be getting worse
