So today was pretty tough it feels like my OCD is in full swing. Last night I drank a few beers and was wondering if anyone else had really bad ocd flare ups after drinking the night before. There’s also other factors I’m sure worth it being 99% outside and my first day back to work in awhile have affected it to
I've drank on SSRIs for at least 20 years. I'm not an alcoholic but I would typically drink on the weekends. When I was in my early 20s I drank heavy and only cut back a few years ago (40 now). I could easily drink a 12 pack and not be drunk. That's not bragging, just the reality of it. My father and grandfather were both heavy drinkers and both struggled with mental health issues. I once said to my father that alcohol seems to "quiet everything down" to which he agreed. It's strange but it gives me peace and a feeling of normalcy. My mind stops running at hyper speed. The problem is it can be detrimental to your health but more importantly with OCD the relief is short lived as the symptoms of OCD after drinking comeback with a vengeance. The next day the anxiety is on another level and I ruminate about drinking the night before and not remembering how I acted. The best advice I can give is to stay away from alcohol but I don't heed my own advice.
@OCDisHell Yes completely agree with it slowing and quieting everything down. I just started drinking occasionally I’ll have 1 to 4 and it knocks the edge off but yes the next day is hell. I’d rather just exercise and feel productive but I have been at my breaking point and drank to just feel peace and be able to sleep.
@LiveLifeAlways I hear that. Ive been at my breaking point many times in life. People often ask why im tired all the time and its because OCD is very taxing both mentally and physically. You add SSRIs and it's incredibly difficult to get/be motivated. I have anxiety, major depressive disorder, and OCD. It's amazing I actually function. I will say exercise is one of the best things you can do for anxiety, ocd. I've cut back on the drinking and picked up the weights again. Best of luck to you man.

Yeah for sure, alcohol increases anxiety and causes my OCD to flare up....I think that's very common.
I agree. I have heard so much about guys with OCD. After drinking, their OCD gets worse, especially for those who have false memories.

It’s a double edge sword it makes me feel like myself again when drinking but next day some days I feel anxious. I need to get my ssri to a therapeutic dose I think before I go back to my wine nights lol I know you’re not allowed to drink on ssris I always have (do what your doctor says)

I forgot to mention Nate Peterson's YouTube videos. He has one where he talks about OCD and Alcohol specifically. He mentions, and I'm paraphrasing, that people who have OCD have lower than normal Serotonin levels. After you drink the Serotonin levels are actually lower than where they started. This makes your OCD symptoms worse, even if on medication. I know from personal experience that this is always the case. Sometimes it will flare or spike my OCD for days, even weeks. I've decided to live sober, because it's not worth feeling hopeless.
Just a quick question for anyone on here today. Does anyone else's OCD get more prominent when they're mad?? Not necessarily "mad" but just frustrated. For example, I'll be having an argument with my girl and the intrusive thoughts just seem to arise way more frequent and severe i guess is a word i can use for it. They just pester me a lot more when I'm frustrated rather than just sitting around playing a video game or something. Appreciate y'all wit the feedback. Have a good one.
Hi guys! Hope everyone is having a beautiful week. I did therapy with a therapist on here and it helped me hugely, I had next to no OCD symptoms for almost 8 months, but recently it’s been flaring up again. I am much better at handling intrusive thoughts and going on with my day but I just have this huge fear of it getting as bad as it was last year. I was unable to get out of bed for 3 months because the intrusive thoughts were so debilitating. I never went to feel that way again. Does anyone have tips on how they deal with OCD flare ups and how they bring themselves back down to a happy medium? Thank you all 🤍
Is anyone’s OCD just a 1,000 times worse in the night? To where you’ve convinced yourself (especially if you wake up between 3-5 am)that you’re completely a different person than who you want to be? Sometimes I’m scared it’s like psychosis or something because of how intense the thoughts and feelings are.. Has anyone else felt this way? Is this a symptom of medication wearing off in the night??
