It’s like living with a domestic abuser in your head, constantly questioning whether you did one thing or another, and regardless of what course of action you choose, you’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t, will berate you if you can’t remember, and will be upset if you socialize and aren’t isolated. Just like an abuser though, the best way to leave that behind is to separate yourself from it, go no contact, and no longer let the abuser dictate your life.

Exactly. OCD is a gaslighter, trying to manipulate you and control your mind, but from the inside. Being on the inside means it has access to all of your deepest insecurities and fears and exploits them. In a lot of ways, OCD really is like being abused by your own mind.

Remember that OCD isn't the real you! It's more like a super-annoying roommate that lives in your head with you. When your brain roommate picks on you, ignore it and it will shut up eventually! Sure, some of them worsened gradually, but the way they began WAS exactly like a lightning strike. In fact, I can remember the specific instance for most of them where I suddenly felt fear, anxiety, shame, or just general discomfort about something, along with the urge to do the compulsion. Ease your breath, untie my hands Release my neck, if you can You don't have to be like that Don't be afraid, There's nothing strange It's not a trap But there's cars coming closer And I think they're trying to run me over Poisoning my food And putting drugs inside my water There's ghosts in my house And I can taste blood in my mouth Don't be afraid, I'm not insane Just irrational, but isn't that the same? (lyrics to "Poison" by Cavetown, which is a relatable song about intrusive thoughts and anxiety and the like)

Brain traffic, and you can only control the one thought you drive. You'll always on a journey, just make sure you're in the thought that's heading in the direction you want. The others are our of your control so don't get mad at them. Let them beep, let them swear, let them crash, let them be, and let them go.

@Nikki232 I used to feel the exact same way, and sometimes I still do. But the thoughts quiet down eventually, trust me. Last year, I had severe OCD and could hardly do anything without feeling extreme anxiety about contamination, and I was ready to give up trying to help myself. Even though I do still struggle, OCD doesn't control my life anymore. You will be able to live the life you want if you just keep going, I promise. ❤️

I struggle so bad with intrusive thoughts. They can be so bad that I'll cry because I KNOW that's not how I feel or want to do. (Too embarrassed to say what they're about) I'll constantly try to figure out why I have them, and constantly figure out what they mean, causing me to constantly circle around and around. I had to get on anxeity meds, which helped a little but the thoughts still happen. How do you help yourself with this? How do you know that you're just not some physcopath? 😅

This is hard to admit, but I’ve been struggling with intrusive thoughts where the central theme is racism. I don’t use racial slurs but my brain worries that I have said something that hurts or offends someone and now I find myself analyzing every social interaction.

Any one else deal with this? Like from the moment they wake up to the second they fall asleep, the intrusive thoughts are there?
