I like a therapist who doesn’t sugar coat and is straight forward. Someone who is a realist and not just “everything is awesome”

Non judgmental, has respect for the person, gives the person the same respect that the person gives to him or her, is kind; soft in the way they speak. If something is hard for the person, does not reprimand the client or make them feel bad; rather, lets them know the expectation and if they did not meet an expectation because it was hard for them, calmly letting them know, in a respectful way that keeps the person’s dignity intact. Doesn’t yell if the person made a mistake, and is willing to adapt and change their original agenda if the client’s needs are different than what he or she expected. Also, works with the client and treats them as an equal partner in the client’s treatment, not like they are better because they are the therapist.

@Anonymous Sounds like you’ve experienced what I have. 3 therapist changes in 1 1/2 years. Not by choice. That can’t be and is not conducive to making real progress. Brenna?

@Tonaki In 7 months I had 4 therapists; one had a family death, another not a good fit, 3rd one went on maternity leave. I'm w Bethany now & she's been w nocd for years w no plan of leaving. She funny, kind, knowledgeable & speaks fluent OCD. I truly feel seen & heard w her. After the 1st one left I had a huge spike & set back. I never stopped althought i thought about quitting. Im glad i didn't. I'm back on track now w two 30 min sessions a week. Like many I'm not just dealing w OCD so the road to recovery is long.

@Tonaki - Thank you for letting us know! We're always striving for our members to have the best experience here at NOCD - If you wouldn't mind emailing member.experience@nocdhelp.com with details from your therapy experience that would be great!

@Brenna - NOCD Team Member I think that is THEE most important quality “Deep Rooted” not “Fly-By-Night”. My experience was addressed back in January. I have not returned to therapy since.

@Tonaki I wanted to quit too. Actuslly ocd wanted me to quit.I almost did. What helped was I got matched w a nocd therapist & messaged them before my appt. I asked how long they are planning on staying and said this is my time & I don't want to hear about their problems during my therapy session. Her response was ok so we had an appt and it's worked out. I'm getting my life back.

@Anonymous Nice job! I’ve dealt with OCD 33 years untreated, 1 1/2 years of therapy. NOCD is great but that one flaw is not good, it’s a setback. Starting over again and again is discouraging. I want to get to a better place but it’s hard when you have to keep going back to square one. Next therapist I get will be heavily interrogated before I accept them. Lol Thanks for chatting with me.

@Tonaki I hear you & agree 100%. I did feel like I was starting over & over again each time I got a new nocd therapist. And idk if i would have stayed if i didnt find Bethany. So interrogate away lol. I get it and feel ya. I too had it for over 40 yrs before diagnosed, heck I thought everyone was like me w these thoughts & "quirks" I just was weak & couldn't deal w them. SO not the case. I'm sorry it took so long for you too!

@Geode1970 My therapist is very open about it but maybe not all of them are I guess I can kind of understand it can be kind of hard for people to want to talk about it. I definitely do not tell most people that I have ocd, it can be embarrassing and people don’t always understand.

@Brooke cookie The one I finally landed on did disclose but the one before, when I asked, basically told me it was none of my business. We didn’t last long, for that and other reasons. I get it day to day not disclosing but I would think therapists, especially on this platform, would disclose so that we could understand how much they really understand the struggles. Makes a huge difference in my experience.
