Tools that work for you
Which tools or resources have you found helpful alongside therapy?
Which tools or resources have you found helpful alongside therapy?
ERP, meds, learning to not react to ocd and just accept the anxiety and not let it build up into the ocd cycle.
Meditation, grounding techniques, and reading books.
I second this
@Amara I LOVE to read! 📚
Non-engagement responses are life!
@dirholly I love non-engagement responses! These responses allow you to face your fears proactively without engaging in OCD’s attempts to get you to ritualize.
Answer back with “maybe” to all of OCDs questions and learning to accept uncertainty.
@Hopeful_808 Literally accepting that uncertainty is a greatttt tool
@Hopeful_808 Learning to accept uncertainty is hard, but we can do hard things!
Medication, deep breathing, self acceptance while also acknowledging that there needs to be a change in order to get better
@Ashleighnf Oooo the self acceptance while also acknowledging there needs to be a change , so compassionately said , chefs kisss
A strong support system that listens and doesnt judge.
@Kelawson16 I love this for you!
Learning to be confident in myself again💗
@evemargaret Thank you for your post. I never understood how I lost my ability to believe in myself and trust myself. It happened over a period of two years, 35 years ago. I am slowly getting better and like the real and healthier me than before. I am stronger but learning humility through this.
@evemargaret This!!! ❤️
My faith, medication, exercising, my support system, challenging myself and being proud of myself, eating enough, daily habits, leaving the house daily, outdoor walks, playing w my dogs!
The zoom groups. The facilitators have been very real and helpful.
@Hope and a future So glad to hear that you enjoy the community support groups!
@Mackenzie - NOCD Team Member Thank you. You have helped me personally to continue on and see what groups are out there and to slowly see where I fit in.
1. Meds (escitalopram has been most helpful for me personally) 2. Magnesium glycinate (supplement that has helped me have an overall sense of calm, less anxiety) 3. Behavioral activation (just get moving and complete even small tasks)
@JohnG I like your behavioral activation!
@JohnG I take the same med and the magnesium glycinate also..it’s been working for the most part; occasionally have fall back moments but definitely not like when I wasn’t on the meds.
@JohnG Did you have to go to a higher dose of escitalopram for ocd?
@Anonymous Did you have to take a higher dose of your escitalopram for the ocd?
@Brbblooming I started at 5mg just so my body got acclimated for a week, then I went to 10mg.
@Anonymous Agree. Triggers still happen but the everyday anxiety levels are lower
@Brbblooming I was given 10mg from the start
Anafranil. It made it possible for me to implement erp techniques in my daily life
@Anonymous Anafranil has helped in what way if you don’t mind me asking?
@Hope and a future It quiets my brain down to a manageable level
Things I’ve learned from different OCD therapists/content creators on Instagram have been super helpful!!
@eshoup Can you share some of your faves?
@eshoup The OCD community is amazing!
ERP but also yoga has really been a life safer for me.
@LynzieWylie Yoga , the first time i tried it ( not the spiritual kind, but yoga and Pilates mix) had me feeeeling so calm, it was great
@Hope13 Yes! The learning to observe your thoughts and doing breath work just makes me feel so good to take on the day whatever OCD may bring. I guess the best way to describe it is giving me resilience
@LynzieWylie Literally :) i also saw you’ve been a member since octobrr , i also started therapy in October !!!
@Hope13 Yes! I’m so happy I’ve made really good progress. Back in October if you would tell me I’m this happy now i wouldn’t have believed it. ERP works :)
@LynzieWylie It doessssss 💙
@LynzieWylie I love this for you! Pilates has been helpful for me!
Meds, breath work, darkness, grounding, community & supportive family.
Definitely meditating, self love and self respect. Knowing that you’re not alone and many people struggle with this.
@Anonymous Thank you so much for sharing! Being kind to ourselves is SO important!
ERP!!!
Lexapro, reading The Bible, praying, exercising, being with friends
@Hopeful58 Did you have to go to a higher dose for your ocd?
@Brbblooming Yes… I was at 30mg for years and then started to really struggle. Found NOCD, a great psychiatrist for meds monitoring and she changed me to 40mg. It has been a game changer.
@Hopeful58 I’m scared to go from 20-30 - did you have any issues? How soon did you start feeling better?
@Brbblooming Make sure to have doctor oversee change. It relieved my brain struggle/churning. I did not have any downside to it… after a couple weeks ??
Family
medication and taking time to do things i love like hiking to clear my head and acknowledge my wins and where I can improve
@Carcharhinus_longimanus Acknowledging wins is SO important! It’s a reminder of how far you’ve come!
Working out. It makes a huge difference with all my energy. Sometimes good energy sometimes nervous energy.
@ChrisEmpowered Relatable! Pilates has been a super helpful tool for me!
Response prevention messages, taking a walk in nature, deep breaths, reading the Bible and faith.

@Thor 22 Yes! Mindfulness has been a wonderful tool for me as well!

@JakeOak What is that?
@Hopeful58 5 things you can see, 4 smell, etc.
The 5-4-3-2-1 and deep breathing.
My phone. I have access to so much on there. Communication, education, entertainment. Phones are criticised too much.
Relaxing my brain
Yoga, meditation, breathing, the Calm app (this app has lots of grounding exercises and meditation exercises), prioritizing self care (sleep, exercise, nutrition), trying new things that interest me, rewarding myself for small wins (like doing an assignment, a quiz, exercising, etc.), embracing crushes
@Potato! Thank you for sharing! Self care has played a major role in my recovery journey!

Sardines
Medication, support system, courage
One the things that really helps me cope with OCD is going to JW.ORG and in the search engine entering "Mental Health".
For me it’s staying busy, accomplishing task, being productive
Walking my dog and watching her run free in the woods, nature, snuggling with my wife, and the surf at the beach.
Went to my first support group meeting-loved it!! Remembering that uncertainty= freedom! I’m so tired of living in fear!!!!
