Practicing mindfulness can help you observe your thoughts without judgment. Techniques like deep breathing or guided meditation can reduce anxiety when facing troubling thoughts. Writing down your thoughts and feelings can provide an outlet and help you process your emotions. It may also help you identify patterns in your thought processes. Try to resist the urge to perform compulsive behaviors, as this can reinforce the cycle of anxiety. Start small by reducing the frequency of compulsions gradually. When a thought makes you anxious, try grounding techniques, such as focusing on your senses. Identify five things you can see, four you can touch, three you can hear, two you can smell, and one you can taste. Engage in regular exercise. Physical activity can help reduce stress and improve mood, which may mitigate anxiety associated with OCD.
find something to put your energy in instead of doing compulsions. like coloring or going on a walk
I talk it out with someone and if I don’t have anyone around I journal it or write what I’m thinking in my notes app. It helps the most :)
Navigating OCD and the intense anxiety that thoughts can provoke is incredibly challenging, and you're not alone in seeking ways to cope. Many find that understanding the thought-anxiety cycle in OCD is a helpful first step toward managing it. Remember, these thoughts often feel important because of the anxiety, not because they reflect reality. Help is here at NOCD and we can assist you in finding outside help if needed too. So maybe the title wasn't the best to to put it but when you guys start having obsessive thoughts how do you stop them before it turns into compulsions and anxiety?
What's a piece of advice you give when someone has constantly intrusive thoughts and ruminations that won't stop? Interested to see what you tell others.....more on this when I see some replies!!!
Hey guys! My boyfriend has said recently that he doesn't know if he's strong enough to continue with our relationship because of my OCD. He wants to see me overcome my symptoms and learn to live a healthy life with OCD, but my anxieties and obsessions are starting to really affect his life. I understand his reasoning, it's hard to see someone you care about struggle with OCD, especially when it starts to affect you too. I'm asking for tips to deal with my compulsions in the relationship. I HAVE to know the answer to things and sometimes that leads into arguments because even with apologies and discussions I can't let things go, even if they genuinely don't matter or are miniscule issues we have. It's a healthy relationship otherwise but I feel horrible because it's impacting him so negatively, that's the absolute last thing I want to happen. I care for him deeply and he cares for me too, so I don't want my OCD to be a reason we break up but I fear it's headed in that direction. I'm starting therapy soon, but until then what are some things I can do to stop my ROCD from impacting him? I know sitting in the guilt and anxiety of not completing my obsessions will help, but I'm wondering if there are other things I can do to maybe remedy some of the damage already done.
