Why is SNL still making the same old joke about OCD?

It happened again: another joke at the OCD community’s expense—this time, on Saturday Night Live. Dave Chappelle kicked off 2025 by hosting SNL and starring in a sketch called “The Immigrant Dad Talk Show.” During the skit, Chappelle exclaims, “My son said he diagnosed himself with OCD. I said, ‘Oh? See deez nuts!’” Though the “deez nuts” joke has certainly been overplayed long past the point of being funny, we’re once again reminded that OCD seems to be the go-to mental health condition to make fun of. For the millions of people living with OCD, seeing it joked about might not be so funny. SNL’s past and present portrayals of OCD serve to remind us how this serious condition is seldom taken seriously in popular culture. So why are we still joking that OCD isn’t real? I like that NOCD is aware of OCD being brought up in media, and discusses that.

Sometimes when I’m feeling overly sensitive it bothers me but I just see it as information about where I’m at in the moment. But then someone will say : you think too much ! You’ve just got to stop it !” And then I feel completely misunderstood!

i think it would help if more celebrities spoke out about it. i also think if everyday folks should also speak out whenever someone jokes. if they call you sensitive, i would ask "do you respect the idea that OCD is real and causes alot of folks actual pain/suffering?" and if they lack the emotional capacity to empathize with someone/something they dont understand, you may want to reconsider that relationship. if theyre open to learning more, great!

I agree that it can be seen as hurtful to families struggling with a loved one who has OCD. However I also take into account that DC was really just making fun of the character he was playing, it was not part of his standup.
