The worst OCD myths
What’s one OCD myth or misconception that you hate?
What’s one OCD myth or misconception that you hate?
That OCD is a choice. Like we can just turn it on or off
@PreciselyNeurospicy If only it were that easy.
Yep legit !
The whole “I let my intrusive thoughts win” bullshit is so infuriating to me. Not only because it grossly misrepresents intrusive thoughts, but because it’s so overused and people act like it’s clever. Ugh. Blood boiling just thinking about it
The misconception that OCD is just being a clean freak. Or that everyone has a touch of OCD.
@ShayneD.M. EXACTLY!
That having ocd thoughts about harming means your on your way to becoming a killer. It’s so misunderstood that that is often portrayed that way in true crime shows.
@Anonymous This is a good reminder that thoughts are just thoughts.
That because I have OCD means I’m automatically a neat freak. I thrive in the organized chaos of my home.
@Kelawson16 THIS!
That it’s all about being clean and avoiding germs. That’s not how mine translates at all and what kept me from considering it as a real problem for me for so long
@Emily Ronna YES!
That because you like things ordered or organized “you’re OCD”. 2 in one.
@melissa.michelon@gmail.com THIS!
That if I don’t seem constantly worried about checking things or ordering things I don’t actually have it.
Unfortunately most people (including a lot of licensed therapists and doctors) think OCD is about hand washing or constant checking. This kept me misdiagnosed as having GAD for 12 years after my first symptoms appeared. This is really infuriating because a lot of people, including myself, had to suffer many years completely untreated or treated with unhelpful or even harmful therapies.
That it’s only about symmetry and things being just right.
I have scrupulosity. I know they mean well, but when people say to just stop being so hard on yourself. It doesn't quite work like that😂
@Euphori! THIS!
My house must be impeccably organized and clean because I have OCD.
@K.G. THIS!
That POCD, ZOCD, or any other sexual OCD means you’re a predator.
@regretfulrain Am I? I feel so disgusted with these thoughts. I feel like I’m a bad person and I’m On my way to go to hell when die
@underratedelephants Tysm that rlly makes me feel better
That whenever I normally misbehave or am normally stubborn over something, then it’s my OCD. (My dad says that)
@Cyberboy1127 This is a good reminder that OCD does not define us.
That OCD is an adjective.
@kortliz OCD is a lot of things, an adjective is not one of them.
It being used to describe being organised without actually real understanding what OCD is.
1. When people say someone IS ocd and not HAS ocd. 2. That ocd is just neatness or germs (even though one of mine is contamination, but that’s not all ocd is). 3. When people think you’re not trying because they don’t see it.
@ocdnoocding YUP! OCD is not a personality trait.
That is a single thing for all people
That if someone likes things clean they’re “so OCD.”🙄
That I desire my thoughts
"I can be messy so there is no way I have OCD." No it is just contending with ADHD and autoimmune fatigue >.<
That if people are neat freaks or extremely organized they might have OCD. Or they’ll say they are “a little OCD”
Everything needs to be organized
That contamination ocd is rotted in not wanting to get sick. I PERSONALLY don’t care about that, it’s all about the germs themselves
That you can just not think this way
That these are intrusive THOUGHTS, unwanted! The reason we’re so frantic is because we DON’T agree with or want them!
That my thoughts make me a paedophile. I've seen paedophiles on YouTube now and I really can't associate myself with what they do.
I hate when people think it sometimes can be used as a superpower or it must make me so diligent in positive ways.
That if I don’t constantly monitor my OCD, it’s gonna come back worse.
That if you get suicidal thoughts then people automatically think you are suicidal
That it’s all about symmetry and that neat freaks are “ocd”
Neat freak
Honestly, I’m not really worried about others perceptions. I’m too concerned about my own stuff to care
