Meds
Does anyone who has OCD NOT TAKE MEDS? Is it possible to not take them and manage life in a way that is productive. (Not really sure what word to use here but I think you all get the idea)

Personally I don’t take medication and manage OCD & GAD to a good standard. I overall have a good quality of life.
I went times with and without meds, with medication I was definitely better but it’s also possible to manage your ocd without them with erp! I think it just depends person to person. It’s honestly up to you and what you and your therapist/ psychiatrist think is best for you. If you don’t want to take them, don’t. But it’s good to give them a try just to see if they help. Most medications like antidepressants will start and you’ll feel pretty low, and after it gets into your system after a few weeks you then feel a lot better depending on each person. Thats what my doctors say! But yeah to answer your question simply in my opinion it definitely is possible!
@izzyyyy24 Thank you both for responding. I was on Fluvoxamine 100 mg. And It def. worked. And I slept pretty well. But I was exhausted ALL the time and almost devoid of emotion. And a couple weeks ago I just quit cold turkey. I don’t recommend it. After 3 days I went to the doc and she gave me 25 mg. but I’m apprehensive to try again cuz I don’t want to be tired anymore. And yes I’ve tried others. I mean I think 25 mgs shouldn’t make me so tired but I’m not gonna know till I try.
@Zoey@0422 Sometimes certain medications don’t work for certain people. I was on 100mg sertraline for 9 months and although it helped my symptoms I felt completely numb and unable to show emotion at all. I then weaned myself off them and then broke down lol. So I then went on the medication you’re on and it’s worked for me! I think it’s just trial and error maybe that mg was too high. But quitting cold turkey definitely won’t help as I’m sure you realised if you do go off again inform your doctor and they’ll help you get weaned off them!
@Zoey@0422 Suggestion perhaps ask your doctor for a prescription for a DNA mouth swab test that can assist in determining your personal medication compatibility with various medications based on your specific genetic makeup.
@Zoey@0422 You might just be pretty sensitive to meds. I was on 50mg fluvoxamine and that was perfect for me, but it did the opposite and kept me awake, so I took it in the morning and stayed on the low dose. I know you’re worried about the 25mg but I really do think it’s worth a shot if the 100 worked well for you.
@izzyyyy24 Yes I was on 100 mg. Sertraline before this and I told her that I was too exhausted on that. So she swapped drugs but not dosages. I tried it for a year cuz like I said it really helped the OCD part and the sleep, counting, ruminating, intrusive thoughts but I was basically in a fog. There was a miscommunication. I thought she said the lowest dose was 100 mg. And it was a capsule. So I didn’t see how I could wean myself off so I just made an executive decision to just stop. Phew! Hardcore! May I ask how many mgs. you take of this?
@777Q Huh! Didn’t know this was a thing. I’ll check it out
@blorbo I definitely am sensitive to these types and benzodiazepines
@Zoey@0422 I take 20mg of it! I’m possibly going to go up to 30mg but still seeing how it goes it’s been great so far! But I was also in a fog with sertraline and many other people I know on it feel the same so if you’re up for it see how the 25mg goes and hopefully it won’t have as drastic side effects!
@Zoey@0422 I found it helpful, did mine 10 years ago once and done since DNA doesn’t change.
@izzyyyy24 And you’re not tired? Do you take it morning or evening?
@Zoey@0422 I take it in the evening, at the start I was tired but as I go on it lessens. If it makes you more awake take it in the morning, if it makes you more tired take it at night. Eventually you’ll stop noticing its side effect as your body adapts to it!
@izzyyyy24 Thank you all for responding. I really appreciate it.
@izzyyyy24 Thx so much for your time
@Zoey@0422 Of course any time!!
I don’t use them now, but used too. I needed them when I went through severe OCD episodes that incapacitated me. Now I manage through therapy and techniques like recognizing my ocd, calling it out and sitting with the discomfort.
@blorbo I do that also and sometimes it works but the intrusive and ruminating thoughts and counting was driving me crazy. So I thought well let me try. And right now it doesn’t feel so bad so I may delay starting again. We’ll see.
Has anyone had success treating their OCD without medication and solely ERP or non-medicinal methods. I have pretty severe OCD and just about every sub-type, but I’ve been on various meds (SSRI & SNRIs) for going on 8 years and have never found one that truly relieves me of symptoms. I’m looking to see if it’s worth continuing with the side effects I experience (mostly mild) or if there are alternatives that could work for me. Low key tired of constantly changing meds in an attempt to find something that works when maybe medicine isn’t the route for me…
17f There is a chanse I will get prescribed medication but it's implied that I will go to therapy too. But therapy in my country is very shitty. I'm absolutely not comfortable talking about my POCD there. I have other ocd themes, like checking, symmetry, moral ocd, troubles reading because of ocd and some other themes, but they are not that severe and they don't make me sui🔪idal (please don't flag my post, you will make it worse). Like I can deal with them, but real even ocd and pocd are absolutely insane and I need help, but I know I won't get it there. I'm thinking of moving to another country in the future if I will make it. But to function and stay alive I need meds, cause a lot fo times its extremely bad. So idk is it possible to just be on meds with no therapy
Hey everyone, I’m curious if anyone here is managing their OCD without SSRIs. I’ve personally struggled with side effects in the past such as low libido and emotional numbness. I have plans to have a family and kids in the future, so SSRIs don’t feel like a long-term solution for me—I’m especially afraid of PSSD (post-SSRI sexual dysfunction). Are any of you managing OCD with alternatives like Wellbutrin, SNRIs, Adderall, NAC, Myo-inositol or any other supplements. Even approaches like the ketogenic diet or other functional methods? I read some studies about how Keto diet has helped some people put their OCD in remission. I’d love to hear what’s actually working for you. Trigger Warning: Sometimes hearing that people can’t manage OCD without SSRIs can be discouraging, but I’m staying hopeful that there are sustainable alternatives out there. Thanks in advance for sharing.
