Your needs are more important than just sitting there and enduring it for the sake of someone else. Therapists are there to help you, and if you do not feel comfortable with the one you’re currently seeing, you need to make that known, because if you are seeing someone you are not comfortable with, you will not make any progress. It is very important to voice your needs to your therapist because they are there to help you. Also, exposure therapy can trigger these types of emotions, I have experienced those kinds of emotions myself while doing or thinking of exposure therapy. If you had a good relationship with your therapist before they brought up exposure therapy, then I think it’s a good idea to bring up that the exposures are too much for you right now and see if you can do something more tolerable so you can slowly ease out of your comfort zone.

@tayanominous I would talk to her or someone about getting a new therapist then. I’m sorry you had to go through that.

Therapy that is based off of regular anxiety or just non-ocd specialized can and likely will make OCD worse. It happened to me. A therapist with experience and OCD knowledge is the best for someone with OCD. Talk therapies and other similar types make it so much harder. It’s like giving your OCD more gasoline to keep the fire burning bigger and brighter. I’d try to find an OCD therapist or at least one knowledgeable in OCD and supportive of ERP

Have you seen any improvement in your symptoms in the past three months you’ve seen this therapist?

@tayanominous If you have not seen improvement in 3 months of therapy, I would get another therapist. It took a few tries until I found the right one and really started making progress

Hey tayanominous! You should feel rapport and feel a sense of connection with your therapist. I understand your concerns and you are valid. ERP is tough business, and your therapist is allowing you to sit with the discomfort before engaging. However, if you don't feel like your therapist is a good fit, you have the option in the app to request a new therapist. While ERP is difficult, it's important for you to feel like you are making progress and feeling confident.
