Sertraline experience?
I am probably going to start sertraline soon. Does anyone have any experience with this medication?

Works really well for me, but everyone's experience with meds are different. Sertraline calms down your anxiety but does not affect OCD intrusive thoughts, so it's like piloting a plane with a really annoying co-pilot but you don't panic about it. Side effects i had when i started the meds (they lasted for a good 2 months then everything was better after) was a lot of brain-fog, apathy and for me high libido. Do not mix it with alcohol you get drunk 4x times as fast and potent.
@Kands If you don’t mind me asking, did you have any sexual dysfunction after the initial 2 months? I worry with the high dose required for OCD that could happen to me.
@Anonymous no worries, in my experience you take a longer time to "finish" if you know what i mean. also erections last longer, so theres that.
@Kands Thank you! I am glad to hear that there weren’t any other effects for you. I really appreciate your willingness to share. Can I ask what dose you were on?
@Anonymous 25mg, then 50mg, 100mg for some time and now i'm back on 50
@Kands Thank you for sharing, that’s really helpful!
I agree with Kands, sertraline calms down anxiety/panic and balances mood well but don’t expect it to cure OCD. Makes severe OCD into something manageable. I had GI side effects and heartburn the first couple months on it, but it subsides with time and when you get to your optimal dosage.
I personally didn’t like it. It made me feel fatigued and I felt a constant brain fog, but my best friend is on it and loves it! she says it’s helped her a lot, so it really depends on the individual!
Definitely depends on the individual. I went as high as 150 mg but was frustrated by the sexual side effects so now I’m on the lowest dose 25 mg, which is what they start you on. Added Buspirone to help with the side effects and am now on 15 mg twice a day of that. I know the Sertraline is supposed to be higher for the OCD, but I also have GAD. So far so good with this mix but everybody’s different. Lot of trial and error to this.
It changed my life. It saved me from the worst downward spiral I had ever experienced. Like someone else said, it won’t cure you, but it takes OCD from something that completely controls your life to something manageable. I take 150mg of that and 200 of Wellbutrin to balance out the side effects.
Love it
I am honestly desperate to try anything, I tried prozac and it works but it makes me gain weight which makes my body image issues even worse, so I need help. Has anyone tried it?
Hello. I am a mom of a 15 yo who has been diagnosed with severe OCD and also depression and anxiety disorders. Medication was recommended. Specifically clomipramine. As of now he refuses to take it. Says he 50 % of the way considering it. He was not able to complete most of his HW last week, spends much of the day feeling anxious, isolates in his room for hours. Says he wants to try to manage it - says he’s doing better bc he was able to focus in his math class - says he doesn’t want med bc he is afraid it will mess w his mind (numb his feelings). Any advice for how to get him over this hump? Any good experience from med? It’s hard for me to watch him suffer knowing that med is an option and he could be feeling better. Also hard to watch him get zeros in classes when he is smart and capable. Thank you ahead of time. Also, his NOCD therapist is on vacation but had recommended med as well to help my son engage better in ERP
Hey friends, I hope you all are well. I just wanted to check in and ask people's experiences about being on medication. I have had OCD pretty much my whole life, just got recently diagnosed 4 months ago and my therapist recommended that I get on meds for it so I have a psychiatrist appointment set up. I'm a little apprehensive about getting on them, but I've realized that I do have some sort of chemical imbalance in my brain that plays a part in my OCD and anxiety. I would love to hear anyones experiences or words of encouragement. Thank you, I hope you all are well.
