Bad Psychiatric Hospital Experience

I went in to a psychiatric hospital 2 days ago for help with OCD and the anxiety relating to it. I did this voluntarily because the anxiety was a lot. I ended up being bunked with drug addicts who talked about violent topics all day and it just made my OCD worse because the staff didn't care at all about anything but the people on drugs. I went in to get help and I feel like I was just treated like a prisoner and none of the people there were knowledgeable of OCD like their website claimed... I just needed to vent. It's been a long 2 days and I'm sick of "professionals" knowing absolutely nothing about OCD and how painful it can be...

I’m really sorry that happened. It sucks how a lot of professionals still don’t know what ocd is and how serious it is. Idk if it’s possible but maybe leave a review or file a complaint or something bc that is not okay.

@Lena1998 Sadly most mental health hospitals know little about ocd. I’ve been in multiple over the last 5 years. It’s rather discouraging.

I'm so sorry to hear you had a discouraging experience. I had a positive experience with my psych ward yet I'm aware it was because of how well funded it was, how the nurses had their own troubles and willing to share their tips, support groups, psychiatrist/counselors scheduled, and the people around me were very positive in influences. It was a very humane experience with strangers that taught me some hardship that could be traumatizing but followed up with what to do and what works for them. It wasn't just gloom and doom it was how to find glitters in life as what didn't work for them might work for me. It is quite a lucky draw of depending on resources, what kind of emotionally intelligent nurses are staffed, and what patients do you end up interacting with. It really made me force to sit with my emotions without trying to work, fight, hide my tears, be bored, and appreciate the small things I did have access to look forward to because it was better than being bored and overthink. You do not need to submit yourself again to this area or experience and hopefully can find a better support elsewhere even if you ever do get committed again that it would be very kind people. I've met a lot of kind strangers that saved me from worse decisions or anxiety at bus stops and those stuck longer than the creepy scary moments of bad people. Anxiety is more effective with at least one person who's emotionally regulated to help focus on and align calmness to. I'm so sorry to hear the health care failed to provide any substance of that for you. Do take good care of yourself during this aftermath.

I've had very good experiences at this places out patient center to I was very shocked when I saw how bad it was at inpatient. I almost couldn't believe how different it was. I did at least learn to advocate for myself in there, I was offered medications I didn't want to try and used my rights to say no and also deny pointless bloodwork ( I stay up to date on mine ). I'll never go there again for OCD and anxiety help, but I can't at least feel good in knowing I made it through it. It did leave my OCD in a poor state. I feel like I need to be monitored which was something I had moved past previously with hOCD. Setbacks will happen though. I'll just do my best from here.

@Lena1998 Wow that is quite a twist. It could be the staff was understaffed so the ones who have not good bed side manners they go here or if it's very understaffed they are worn out and so desensitized they can only prioritize those who seem more of risk of themselves and other patients. I also got drugs because I was too happy and got everyone motivated. My bed roommate got sent to the room alone for speed walking because it was still considered running even though she wanted to exercise lol. We were too influential. Last I saw her she was popular on tiktok. The staff has only so many eyes and hands and energy to contain everyone so it's very motivated for staff to aim for bare minimum to make everyone neutral. OCD likes to trick about using others treatments as evidence even though it's not related. So I hope you get presence of support. No reassurance needed, just nice to have someone there to like "be with". It's a monkey see monkey do regulation when the other person looks calm so it is a bit more self motivation to feel calmed too. Sending good vibes for your setforwards.

When did you realize you have OCD?

Last year during April I started to experience groinal responses when I looked at kids. I was terrified of what it could mean and decided to attempt two weeks later. The very next day I had those responses I decided to attempt. I didn’t really have the courage to do so at that time but I started experiencing images about disturbing things done to kids and as days went by it got worse. April 16 was the last straw and I couldn’t take it anymore. I ended up in a mental hospital but before I ended up there I had searched up what I was experiencing. That’s when I started to understand that it was OCD. I felt relieved for a few moments until I felt the urge to get more information. I saw lots and lots of things and many comments saying that it wasn’t normal and that people who went through this were disgusting people who shouldn’t be allowed to roam free. That’s when my anxiety and fear became worse and I tried to get rid of it but nothing worked. I shook the entire time I was awake, I didn’t have motivation for anything anymore, I just felt so disgusting. In the end, I’m so glad I ended up in that mental hospital or else I wouldn’t be here with my friends and family. Thank you for reading my story, I’m so glad that I’m not alone

Harm OCD made worse by psychiatrist visit

I went to talk to a psychiatrist based off my Nocd therapists recommendation. I had a very hard week beforehand where I had anxiety so bad I couldn't leave my bed. It seems like once I get my period my anxiety and everything dissipated some so I talked to the psychiatrist. Anyways, I was immediately put off by her because she told me she didn't have any information on me included in the referral for one reason or another. So I had to basically "fill her in" on my life story. I have anxiety disorder, panic disorder, OCD and PTSD. I told her these things and how hard the last week had been. She started asking questions like I had bipolar disorder, which I don't have. She then wanted me to take buspar and Zoloft TOGETHER daily. I know for a fact you never start two medications daily at once. You don't know which one is causing symptoms if you do. So I immediately didn't like that. I asked her about Zoloft specifically daily because it is an SSRI what I should do if it gave me thoughts of harm for myself. She told me "just go to the hospital".... Now, I don't wanna say that was the worst possible thing she could have said to me, but it was. Because now my OCD is spiraling that just my general harm OCD thoughts are enough to mean I need to go to the hospital. It had been 2 days and I cannot stop obsessing that maybe I'm depressed or suicidal because of this. I know I don't want anything to happen to me. I love my family and my friends. I am scared of death. But the thought is sticky and it's been so, so frustrating. My anxiety has been so frustrating. I feel so lost and like nothing I'm trying to fix my issues is working very well. NOCD therapy has been one of the only things to help in the long term, but I still get terrified of certain obsessions like suicide. I don't really know what to do, if anyone has any advice or any personal experience that may help, anything would be nice right now. I've felt so lost trying to figure it all out.

Suicidal OCD and harm OCD

I’ve recently been struggling a lot with OCD. I have had OCD for a long time I just didn’t realize it until more recently. About seven months ago I developed panic attacks one day randomly at work. I thought I was having a heart attack and went to the hospital where they told me it was just a panic attack and I assumed I would snap out and be better within a few days. However it didn’t. Here’s where it gets scary, I was staying at my then boyfriends house while dealing with blurry vision, anxiety attacks everyday, and more (unsure of what was going on). But at some point I saw my bfs (pew pew 🔫) on his table and it sent me into an anxiety attack after sudden thoughts that I was going to hurt myself with it. I begged him to put it away when I’m not looking so I didn’t know where he put it. He did. These thoughts lasted for about four days but began to go away. (I thought that was it and I would be back to normal). Unfortunately though I ended up moving back in with my family when we couldn’t get my panic attacks under control in time for me to get back to work and pay bills. However, coming home brought up a lot of trauma from when I was kid. My anxiety got worse but I didn’t have those thoughts again. About two and half months ago though, I got sick and went to the hospital where they gave me steroid pills and a steroid shot but sent me into some kind of psychiatric event. Ever since then though, I have been suffering from harm OCD, I have had moments of intense anger that I usually have to completely walk away and go on my own because of how intense they are, and it feels like it’s getting worse. Today I felt fine until about and hour and half ago where I started to dwell on the fact that my suicidal thought was influenced by my OCD and at the moment my OCD is at the worst it’s been. This caused me to get suddenly really depressed and I started crying thinking about how I can’t handle this. I then saw a post talking about how suicide rates are high for people with this form of OCD and it made me question if I am mentally strong enough to pull through this. I fear that at times I’m getting worse. I have good days but I have a lot of bad days. Unfortunately this sent me into such a bad panic attack I went over to my nanas crying about how I can’t deal with this. I took a 0.25 mg Xanax which helped calm down the panic attack portion of it but my brain is still uncomfortably active. I guess I just need hope. I’m so saddened by this. It’s like my life took a total 360 in 10 months and got even worse since the steroid shot. Idk what to do about it. I can’t stop the spiral. I talk to two different therapist weekly and start more next week, making it 5 times a week. I feel no improvements…
