I lost 28 years to OCD. Here’s what I wish I knew earlier.
Mackenzie Nordone was so afraid of dying that she wasn't living. She’d spent years convincing herself she could manage OCD on her own, but there was no denying it anymore: the condition had completely taken over. At age 28, she no longer recognized the person she saw in the mirror. Intrusive thoughts about contamination and deadly diseases took her out of the present, making every moment of her day feel unbearable. Worst of all, she was dragging her family into her compulsions—barely functioning as a wife, mother, daughter, or friend. She knew something had to change. Exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy seemed scary at first to Mackenzie, but staying stuck was even more frightening. So, she reached out to NOCD and gave ERP a chance. Through ERP, Mackenzie found the strength to face fears she’d avoided for decades, and came out the other side more grounded, confident, and alive. Now, as a support group host at NOCD, she helps others understand that while we can't change the past, we absolutely have power over our future. "This is the first time in my life that I know who I am, and that I feel confident in myself…It hurts to realize that for 28 years, I didn't have that, but it’s a beautiful thing to know that from 28 on, I do have that." - Mackenzie Nordone Watch Mackenzie’s powerful story of finding courage, facing fears, and getting her life back.
