anyone ever get triggered by the general forum?

I’m getting very concerned that the general forum is unregulated and people who have self-diagnosed with OCD, but do not have OCD, are posting there. What is your opinion about this? I read a post from someone who thinks they have POCD, but it sounds awfully like p*dophilic disorder to me. As someone who has been diagnosed with POCD, this is very triggering to me. Any thoughts/advice?

I changed my filter to “therapy members only.” That narrows posts down to people who are being treated.

I agree, I wish there were more guidelines of posting criteria. I see a lot of reassurance seeking posts, where I think the reassurance might contribute and feed to the ocd. Or I see posts that make me question “what does this have to with ocd?” I don’t mean to invalidate anyone or question their experience. Most of us members are not therapists and aren’t equipped to handle some situations that are posted as well. I’m not sure what the overall goal of this forum is. I don’t really see how this is for support; giving reassurance may make things worse so it’s not supportive. I wish I saw more things like “my ocd is affecting/ or has affected me by x y z. Here’s something I’ve tried and it’s helping/not helping. What are some things or mantras that have helped you?”

The general forum does feel overwhelming to me too, and sometimes it feels like a free for all that goes off track from the goal of bringing people with OCD together. I also set my filters to therapy-only members as needed. I also try to remember that while anyone can post on the forum, I can limit what I read if it helps my own mental health. If something is triggering, use your ERP tools, and remember that someone’s experience does not dictate your own.

@MichelleV thank you! sometimes it does feel as though other people’s experience CAN dictate my own and i have to not only sit with the discomfort and realize that i and the person writing are two different people.

I have noticed this. I don’t struggle with POCD (right now anyway, I guess it could happen). My issue is people who haven’t started therapy yet giving questionable advice. I saw someone post about rumination and they received a suggestion along the lines of “think through your worst case scenarios and make a plan for each worst case scenario” which sounds a lot like ruminating even more to me lol. I could be wrong, but I worry that people are getting advice that is going to make their symptoms worse.

I feel this! It’s like a giant Reddit page. 🥴 it’s very triggering. I usually just delete the app until my therapy session. But my ERP homework is to read through the forum every day 😭

Let me be honest.

Ok so I just downloaded this app like two days ago because I was looking for a OCD specialist. Maybe this is just my opinion but the posting’s on this app can be super triggering. If feels like even sharing your experience on an app like this can contribute to fueling OCD. So many people I see reassurance seeking, confessing and posting the same things multiple times to gain certainty. Makes me wonder if this app is counterproductive to the point of OCD treatment. I’m guilty of spending hours scrolling through the post trying to find people who relate to me, but in the end it makes me more anxious and fuels my OCD. Idk what do you guys think.

Ranting, what are you doing??

Lately I’ve seen way too many comments under posts about OCD, especially the harm, POCD, and relationship themes that are incredibly misinformed and honestly harmful. People saying things like “these thoughts are unnatural,”or “you need to go get real help” and encouraging confession ***compulsions*** when they clearly have no understanding of how OCD actually works. Let me be clear: OCD involves distressing and unwanted thoughts, images, or urges. That doesn’t make someone dangerous. It makes them someone with a mental illness who is terrified of their own brain. Saying these people are “unnatural” or implying they’re broken only reinforces shame, and shame is the opposite of what helps anyone heal. If you’re commenting under OCD-related posts on an OCD ***app*** without understanding what intrusive thoughts are, or what compulsions can look like, or **how OCD can attach itself to the things we fear most** then please, stop. You are not helping. You’re reinforcing stigma and pushing people further into silence. OCD is already isolating. We don’t need more people moralizing or projecting trauma theory onto something they haven’t experienced or don’t understand. If you really care, go learn. Read about intrusive thoughts. Learn about ERP therapy. Or maybe just listen. Because some of us are barely hanging on, and comments like those don’t just miss the point, they can do real damage. I’m sorry if I come off too angry, it just really upsets me to see people speak on something they clearly don’t understand. End of rant. Thank you for reading 🤍
