Medication
Are there any medications that help with OCD?
Are there any medications that help with OCD?
There are yes, but this is something you would need to discuss with your GP. There are no hard and fast rules with medication though. What works for others might not work for some, because our brain chemistry is different. Also some medication may have a lot of side effects for some people and not others. For some they find that medication works really well and compliments therapy, for others medication isn’t an effective solution. Explore it with your GP. Hope that helps.
@Brad1991 that helps a lot thank you so much
You would want to discuss it with your provider. You will want to work with a provider that specializes in OCD treatment as well. Typically the dose for normal depression is lower than the dose for OCD. An example would be Zoloft for depression might be closer to 50-100mg. For OCD I did not see benefits until 150mg and worked my way up to 200mg. There are studies you can research that better explain it. Later I had side effects and switched to a non SSRI. Everyone is different and there is no medication that works for everyone. But there are helpful medications out there.
Generally SSRIs or something with strong serotonin action is preferred for medication. Common ones prescribed are Sertraline (Zoloft), Fluoxetine (Prozac), fLuvoxamine (Luvox), and Escitalopram (Lexapro).
Yes. There are several. SSRI’s are pretty common. I have taken them on and off for years. My OCD is probably cut in half, maybe 60-70% when I’m on one compared to when I’m not. I don’t love being on one but it makes life a lot easier. Many meds have side effects and take weeks to take full effect so don’t get discouraged if things aren’t 100% better day one. I normally have 2 weeks of side effects and then start feeling the benefits around week 4
What type of benefits have you experienced since being on meds?
@Natoosh Decreased anxiety. Better mood. Can enjoy life and not spend it worrying and spiraling
@OCDMM Which med made the most difference for you? I know we are all different. I'm scared to try.
@Natoosh For me, Paxil was the most effective but had too many side effects. I took it for almost 20 years, though. Now I am on Lexapro. Zoloft and Prozac just weren’t good fits for me
@Natoosh And I understand being afraid to try. I wouldn’t take meds if you don’t have to but for me, life is very difficult without them
@OCDMM How did you know those meds were not good fits?
@Natoosh Zoloft made me feel kind of angry and Prozac I had a very weird side effect where I could smell everything very intensely. I tried it again later thinking maybe it was a fluke and it came back. Like I couldn’t sit out back because the smell of dog poop was so intense or I could smell sweat on people who weren’t all that sweaty. That’s not a common side effect, just a random one for me on that particular med. Paxil affected me hormonally and also made me gain the most weight. Lexapro isn’t perfect but it’s the happiest medium. No weird side effects, just the normal weight gain and dry mouth mostly
Well i have taken SSRI escitalopram which is for anxiety and depression But can be used for OCD, and the highest dose (20mg) didn’t help me at all with ocd But kind of with anxiety, although i had to stop Because of side effects and since then im scared to try other ones and have to fight with this by myself. Every organism is for itself.
There are actually. When I was in the deep trenches with ocd, I was told to get on fluoxetine. It helped so so much with my intrusive thoughts. I struggle with ocd again now but that’s only because I had left my religion which was the thing that triggered it but if you don’t want to be religious try fluoxetine out. It saved me
You could ask your doctor about doing a genesight test. It’s expensive kinda but it will show exactly what meds would work best with your genes and chemistry in your body.
