The obsession behind “Do I really have OCD?”
"What if I'm just making this all up? What if I don't really have OCD and I've been lying to myself this entire time?" Many people with OCD experience doubts like these, and there’s a name for them: meta OCD—a subtype of OCD that involves obsessing over whether you’re obsessing. Meta OCD can make you question everything from your diagnosis to whether you’re doing treatment correctly, leaving you desperate for answers. Just like other OCD themes, meta OCD loses its power when you practice accepting uncertainty—one of the core skills taught in exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy. Over time, you can learn to let these doubts pass by without engaging, and keep moving forward with your life. Read more about meta OCD, how it’s treated, and why these doubts don’t have to hold power over you.
