religious ocd/ faith

I am sorry you've experienced this. I have no experience with Mormonism (which I consider to be heretical) - but I am a committed Orthodox Christian. I've come to understand faith in Christ and following Him and being in communion with the Holy Trinity is really the purpose in life and it's been wonderful. Faith is a natural place for obsessive and intrusive thoughts to attack because it often goes hand-in-hand with doubt. The key, I think, is to truly allow any such thoughts to drive us back to the feet of Christ, where we cast them upon Him (1 Peter 5:7) - knowing that He knows our hearts and He told us to lean on Him. Properly understood, intrusive thoughts can be a wonderful mechanism for strengthening our reliance on God, and, over time, we can defeat them. I don't know if this is helpful at all, apologies. I haven’t started my therapy yet and I haven’t fully dove into my childhood. But I have had this thought as well because I also grew up Mormon and can also remember compulsions and how scared I was. Now I don’t identify as Mormon or any religion and when people ask I just tell them I’m not sure what I believe, I’m still figuring it out.

I grew up Mormon and experienced intense scrupulosity starting at the age of 7. I’ve done some emdr off and on the last couple of years and that has helped turn down the volume on my ocd voice specifically in scrupulousity.

I'm new to OCD and religious scrupulosity, but I have thought the same thing. I grew up Mormon and have experienced a lot of shame and guilt around my religion because I can't do things perfectly or live up to the expectations. I think it is because I misinterpreted some of the teachings, and my mind takes things to extremes. I do a lot of either/or thinking when it comes to my religion. It's hard for me to be content with somewhere in between and change that type of thinking after years of doing it.

I grew up Mormon and I also believe most of my obsessions are rooted in the religion. Any intrusive thought I had growing up, I attributed to either god or satan. There was really no gray area and the extremes were so exhausting. Any doubts I had about the church resulted in immense guilt and confessions. I left when I was 16 and a few years later it still comes up. I often find myself searching for a different belief system but like you said it can be so difficult to rebuild after the lds conditioning. One thing that’s helped me is praying to nobody in particular. I just start praying and tell myself it will land where it needs to. It’s been very healing and taken some of the scrupulosity out of my beliefs! I hope you’re doing well
