The best things to say when someone says they’re “so OCD”
Simple, educational ways to speak up when OCD is minimized:

Simple, educational ways to speak up when OCD is minimized:

I like the first one because sometimes the person ACTUALLY has OCD and is genuinely having a hard time at the moment. That is a very different case with a different course of action from someone just making a mistake
I just ask them what their fear is behind the behavior. 100% of them give a confused look and say there isn't. That's when I start explaining what OCD actually is and use my experience as an example. Then I end on that they probably meant anal retentive and that there's a big misunderstanding between the two.
THIS!
Everyone who says this, are just pick me people that believe a whole ass mental illness was invented because people like to be clean.
I explain OCD this way: OCD means Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. It’s a condition where the brain sends false danger signals. People get scary or uncomfortable thoughts and feel driven to do compulsions to feel safe. The problem isn’t the thoughts. It’s the brain’s alarm system misfiring. OCD is not about being too clean, too organized, or too careful. It’s about anxiety. A person with OCD does compulsions, mental or behavioral, to reduce anxiety and feel safe. The reality is that OCD is a condition based on a false sense of reality that feels completely real to the person who is struggling with it. So the question is: is that what you are experiencing when you say, “I am sooooo OCD”?
@Anonymous Healing is possible.. Spot on; this is especially true for existential ocd. In reality you are SAFE in reality but your brain throws all the what ifs at you and you can’t keep up with them it got so debilitating for me that my cognition started to become impaired.
Love this! Thanks for sharing!
I believe a lot of people never mean anything malicious by it, it's just people don't always understand, unless they have been affected by it directly or indirectly. 🙏
This is a great infographic!! It's deeply frustrating when people use disorders as an adjective, but I do try to use it as a teachable moment when I can!
I LOVE a good teachable moment!
"Soo OCD" people when they find out that I would cry myself to sleep nights on end: 😨
@HOY “i’m so ocd” ppl who just like things to be organized and not cluttered when they find out i was shaking and nauseous for days on end
People reducing ocd down to only wanting to clean and do whatever is sad. It’s been a battle for me and it hurts when you see people with perfectly good mental health say this stuff
I think Hollywood has made a "contribution" on this matter, they have popularized this misunderstanding of the condition, for example this movie named "As good as it Gets" with Jack Nicholson.
I love this!!! I’ve been saying this for a while. How insensitive people are when they say they are “so ocd” but aren’t referring to real mental health side of it. I’m so glad for this post. I will use it as a Teaching moment when I can
It unfortunately won’t let me see the list though
I don’t think it bothers me as much but it’s still so misunderstood it sucks and my heart goes out to those who don’t understand who has it themselves and are scared to get therapy I do believe the cleaning organizing could be distressing it’s self for some especially if it interferes with their lives and are scared of germs and contamination or feel the need to clean as a compulsion to escape their head
Sometimes I fantasize about chewing people out for saying that but I know it wouldn't actually make me feel any better in the long run. I try to meet people half way. If they tell me to kick rocks after that, whatever man, you don't get it.
I dont even bother correcting them. No harm done. They may actually have it. Who knows. But If they say it alot around me and it starts to get annoying. Then maybe i'll ask if they are in therapy for it.
I hate when people do this, like bro, do you even know what OCD is. And It’s always the people that tease me for my OCD tendencies
