My mom has always told me whenever I have my like really bad days that it’s just ocd but I’ve never gotten tested, but it does seem to run in my family as my brother, dad, & grandma all have lots of signs for ocd. How can I ask my mom if I can get actually tested?
Hi Piper, I am a mom and my daughter was just recently diagnosed with ocd. She had to mention her concerns about OCD to me a few times before it really hit me that we should make an appointment to get her tested. So I encourage you to let your mom know (again) that you’re concerned that you may have OCD and you’d like to get tested. Sending you lots of courage and support - you are already so brave.

It might help her to know that it is really easy to get tested for OCD. You can do that through NOCD. They diagnosed me within one session. NOCD has all their sessions over zoom, so it's really easy. They also take most insurance. It is only $35 a session for me :):)
@Tea and Honey Okay!! I’ve been doing a lot of research trying to figure out how to get tested, so do you think it would be easiest to do it through NOCD?

@Tea and Honey I asked my mom, and she said we can talk about my symptoms and ask my pediatrician about it! It took me all day to build the courage but I managed to do it! Thank you so much for the encouragement
@Piper :3 Yay!!!!!!!! That makes me so happy!!!!!!!!! That's great!!! I think it's important to know that not all pediatricians have a full understanding of OCD. It is a little outside their training. OCD is not exactly like other anxiety disorders. However, it has some hallmarks that would make it really clear if you have OCD. #1 sign of OCD: Intrusive thoughts (which means thoughts that come into your head against your will. They are usually scary or disturbing.) # 2 sign of OCD: Engaging in safety behaviors (compulsions) in order to negate the intrusive thoughts. ------------------////--------- This can manifest in many different themes, such as religious OCD, harm OCD, relationship OCD, etc. Let me tell you how this looked in my life. I had thoughts repeat in my brain like a broken record every day. I thought I had to put the word "not" next to all my scary thoughts in order to neutralize them. It was very torturous and miserable. Let me know if you have any questions!!! I'm so glad you can talk to a doctor about this!!!!!!! I'm so so glad you brought it up with your mom. That step takes a lot of courage. But we get better when reach out for help (and we often don't get better if don't).
@Tea and Honey I very much relate to the examples you were showing, and I’m also making a kind of list of sorts to write down my “symptoms” idk what to call them but I’m trying to just get my thoughts organized so I can really be prepared! Hopefully this is a good idea
@Piper :3 That's great!!!! Don't worry about anything. You are on a journey of recovery. There are lots of ups and downs and turns on the pathway. If the first thing doesn't work, that's okay. It's just part of the journey. You just keep going. You are learning. Eventually, in time, you will get exactly where you need to go. So don't worry! God's got you!!
I hate the perspective your mom has on this, signs of OCD is not a diagnosis. OCD is also one of the most misunderstood mental illnesses by the public, you could have something completely different but you won’t know that unless you get evaluated. You need to be more direct and tell your mom this is having a significant impact on your life and you need to get tested so it can be confirmed if you have it or not, so if you do have it you can get treatment for it. Lay it all out on the table for her and advocate for yourself!!
