When Sunday scaries become something more
Racing thoughts on a Sunday might seem like the “Sunday scaries”—that common feeling many of us get before heading back to work or school. But if you’re noticing a sense of urgency and distress that seems more intense than standard weekend anxiety, it might be OCD. OCD thoughts often feel “sticky,” and you may feel a strong urge to “figure things out” or find certainty. Sometimes this can lead to an overthinking spiral. If you notice this happening, here are a few tips that can help: 1. Ask yourself: “Is this happening right now?” OCD loves to pull your focus into the past or the future. If you notice this happening, try to come back to the here and now. 2. Use your senses to ground yourself in the present: Try naming what you see, hear, smell, or feel, either silently or out loud. 3. Remind yourself that discomfort isn’t danger. It’s a feeling that will eventually pass on its own. 4. Reach out if you feel stuck: An OCD specialist can help you learn how to sit with discomfort and uncertainty, without further spiraling.
