I am afraid to take OCD meds since some of them are the same that's being used to control bipolar and schizophrenia and since there's a genetic component I'm scared that if I take these meds I will get bipolar or schizophrenia or at least get worse also some of the side effects are intolerable so what do u think am I overreacting what was and what is Ur experience with OCD meds
Hii, i very recently started to take meds for ocd, i completely understand where youre coming from, but remember meds *treat* bipolar or schizophrenia as well as ocd, they arent gonna make you get said disorder. Often you get put on Sertraline (or so ive been told) which is mainly an antidepressant which is used also to treat ocd. So thats basically not even a risk. I hope this helps!! Thank you very much for the input but I'm mainly talking about the idea (not medical or by doctors) possibility that anti depressants can lead to mania and from my experience with relatives I'd rather be depressed than manic I know it doesn't sound right but I'm hesitant which is also a part of OCD most people relate to
@Anonymous ofcc dw abt it. I totally understand, but remember meds are still not intended to trigger or cause any other mental “outbreak” (terrible term to use but idk how else to phrase it). Remember meds are temporary and hence their effects are too. Its normal at the start of starting meds to maybe feel a bit down/depressed but it often goes away. If it doesnt, you talk to your psychiatrist about it and they will either alleviate your dose or change med so that it works for you. Their main priority is that you feel better, so if for whatever reason a med was causing you harm, it would be changed instantly. I hope this helps!
@theduck So Ur saying I need to break the cycle of OCD and the meds can weaken the shackles for me to break free easily then the psychiatrist would stop them and all side effects will go away and if the symptoms were too bad I can just ask him/her to change them (at least that what I understood) Than u very much that was really helpful

Prozac helped me!
So i've been on antidepressants for like, 15 years. After talking with my psychiatrist, we doubled my dosage of Effexor to help with OCD. i'm only about a week and a half into the double dose and it's definitely feeling like an adjustment. you can always try a med and if you don't like them, you can stop. i'd suggest maybe just taking to a doctor and exploring the idea.
Do they ease the anxiety or is that another thing for another medication what was Ur experience with anxiety and thanks for Ur help
@Anonymous The effexor helps with both anxiety and OCD. My meds have helped a bunch with my anxiety. I usually just feel anxious for no reason and I would have physical symptoms, like shaking. But i don't experience those as much anymore. ☺️
