Tourette’s Controversy

I’m wondering if anyone is having a similar experience. I’m finding the discourse around the Tourette’s outburst at the BAFTA awards very upsetting. I think this is because it is showcasing that a huge amount of people have just no concept at all of how Tourette’s works. As people with OCD, we have a lot of overlap with Tourette’s (as well as the significant number of us who also suffer from Tourette’s or Tics disorders), and it is so disheartening to me to see how little the world understands the way intrusive thoughts or tics/tourettes compulsions work. I also had Tics as a child, so I know intimately how little control you have over it, and from OCD we all know how much we do NOT agree with our intrusive thoughts or support them. It’s very difficult to realize that so many people don’t understand that it’s the very fact that we hate those thoughts, that makes them intrusive. Just wondering if anyone else has been following this, as this seems like the only community I belong to that I could think of that would understand how deeply this whole situation stings. Any thoughts?

I can’t say that I blame people for their response because at face value it does look like something it’s not, and because of the discrimination that POC have faced it’s understandable that this would cause an upset, HOWEVER, there should also be a further conversation around disability, intrusive thoughts, and holding people accountable for their behavior in very constructive ways that aren’t like “you are so horrible and don’t deserve happiness” because that’s not a way people can learn and grow regardless of if they have a disability. The conversation should go to, like hey, how can we respond in a way that acknowledges that this person has this thing that’s out of their control, and what have they contributed to society despite this action, that they can not control.

@tedlassoenjoyer! I also think that because the us government is so shit right now and actively racist and facist, that people are more likely to view any negative behavior that’s deemed to be bigoted as all or nothing in that regard, living little room for benefit of the doubt in the culture. It makes total sense in the context of world events, however the person who said it may just have been at the wrong place at the wrong time

… On CBS good morning they addressed the situation in a round table discussion format this morning. The interesting pivot was made that this is a BBC broadcast decision not to edit out the Tourette’s tick for whatever reasoning that person at that level of responsibility has. … It’s also ok to be offended by the Tourette’s tick , that is a natural reaction to a social situation in the moment or as it’s playing out with spin doctors everywhere seeking social media platforms attention. That helped me process it better. A simple validated pivot to consider for processing my thoughts and attention span.
