Memory and ocd
Does anyone else experiences poor memory? Is it correlated with ocd? Sometimes Im not even sure what exactly I ate 2 days ago

Yes, quite a bit. Don’t know if it’s OCD related though.
I do, I have horrible memory and it’s been worse recently.
I wonder where it comes from
it drives me crazy not being able to remember things, i wonder if our memories aren’t necessarily worse but normal people don’t notice the holes in their memories bc they don’t go back and comb through it?
That might be true but at the same time I believe that people without ocd would remember such daily things as their meals. I heard that long term stress may lead to memory loss but idk if thats the case :)
@Anonymous trauma causes memory loss and ocd could be considered traumatic, maybe at a low level, but it can’t be good for our brains to constantly be exposed to that
@Anonymous Its for sure not good for us, ours brains are overflowing .Maybe we are spending too much time in our heads so we dont focus on things as meals or clothes in our lives so we dont remember it
Hey! I’ve been experiencing this and I’m happy to share. The way I understand my experience in that when im so preoccupied in my mind constantly it’s hard to form memories in a more solid way. It’s just me not wanting to present and it’s hard to form memories when that’s the case
Hey, thank you for your response I think that its important for us to share our experiences here. I understand you, to somebody else I have replied that we may be spending too much time in our heads so we dont remember our days exactly...or maybe even our brain isn't labeling such simple things as meals or clothes as anything specific only the triggering parts are important to it
@Anonymous I like your insight, when all the processing power is directed inwards it makes sense that memory would be all blurred together. We are definitely onto something true there.
I remember a lot, too much actually. It honestly makes my OCD worse, because I wish I could forget stuff more that is not a big deal
Oh so it goes the opposite way for you, interesting! I understand that it might be hard, my brain is just using the triggering stuff and is remembering them so I kinda get how you feel
@Anonymous Yeah, I’d love to be able to forget stuff like small worries that turn out to be not a big deal
@4orge I remember them too actually so I understand you but what upsets me is that I dont remember the details about my days like if someone asked me hey what you wore or ate two days ago I wouldn't know
@Anonymous I get how that would bother you. Being able to remember certain things can be helpful. It’s the letting go part that I have to be better at doing.
@4orge Yes sometimes we stick with the bad ones reliving them over and over I think that in order to get rid of them we just as simple as it may seem can't give them any attention just start doing something focus on something else dont dig into them
@Anonymous That is correct. I am trying to join social groups now to help distract me from thinking about these things
@4orge I wish you all the best!
@Anonymous Thank you
I feel like my short term memory is actually really great, but my long term memory is very very fuzzy
When does the long term memory start for you?? After a month??
@Anonymous That seems about right, yes. As time goes on I forget so many things and what I do remember starts to get less clear to me. I pretty much have no memory of my childhood apart from a few big events
@AllisonWonderland Not being able to remember much from your childhood is probably sad. I can somewhat imagine how you feel, I dont remember much from like 2-3 years from now. I wonder how memory can work well, do people with it remember their life clearly or are there spots too?
@Anonymous From what I do remember it wasn’t a very happy childhood, so I’m kind of glad I don’t remember haha But memory is definitely a fascinating thing! My husband swears he has a memory of being in the car with his dad before he was able to talk. I have no reason to doubt him, but the idea of remembering something so far back is wild to me!
@AllisonWonderland Im sorry about your childhood. Its amazing that he can remember something soooo distant
For me, when I'm going through an OCD episode, my short-term memory becomes quite bad. It's a combination of bad sleep, high stress, and low mindfulness. All of these make forming memories more difficult. My long term memory seems to remain mostly fine though.
Its understandable how your short term memomory would be worse during an ocd episode personaly I believe that it might be cause your brain is focusing mostly on the triggering parts of the day and not the good or neutral stuff but I might be wrong hahah. Its good that your long term memory is okay! Thank you for the response, sending love
i do. it started last year when my OCD got worse. now i barely have short term memories but sometimes if someone says something it’ll trigger my memory. but time, places, anything feels like a dream to me when i try to recall in my memory
This is so relatable sometimes people can bring back a memory for me too!
Yes yes yes! It makes me wonder if I’m getting early onset Alzheimer’s. Both my parents had it and I’m of retirement age, but we won’t talk about that. Lol But my mind is always thinking thinking thinking about the past, my thoughts and feelings etc.. I think our minds get so twisted up with worry and obsessions that it just doesn’t function correctly. At least I hope that’s what it is. Also, my Klonopin did that when my dr upped it. Going off of that was pure hell. It took me a year and a half. I take 1/2 of one only when needed now. It made me have memory loss on the higher dose. So meds can definitely mess with your memory.
Im sorry that it makes you think about alzheimers. I think its correct what you said about how our minds function. Thank you for saying about the side effects of meds, personaly im not financially able to go to therapy so I don't take anything besides ashwaganda haha so thats not the case for me
