Why do I have such a hard time letting things go?
Throwing away a receipt. Deleting old photos and texts. Donating a shirt you don’t wear anymore. These might sound like simple decisions, but when OCD gets involved, they can feel loaded with fear, guilt, or responsibility: What if I need this one day? What if deleting it makes me forget something important that happened? What if giving it away means that I’m ungrateful? OCD can convince people that letting go can lead to regret, harm, or consequences they can’t undo. So instead, they might keep things “just in case,” or try to maintain a “perfect” mental catalogue of past events. But holding on in response to OCD's demands can drain your energy, fill up your space, and consume your time.
