Fun question of the day!
What is a hobby outside of what ocd tells you that you actually enjoy or used to enjoy!
What is a hobby outside of what ocd tells you that you actually enjoy or used to enjoy!
Playing my instruments
Playing guitar! 🎸
Making music or playing baseball Listening to podcasts, reading a book, etc.
I had an ERP of saying cuss words over and over and over again even as a Christian with a therapist who did not have my faith. I noticed the anxiety in my body when I said those things even though my beliefs were not that strong. Essentially, it’s a reevaluation of overvaluing stuff and it exposes the brain to the actual “stressor” or “trigger.” Interesting how we perceive threats! It’s cool to be scared, because we cannot always control things. Then we use that and the therapy information to work on ourselves and coping strategies.
Mine is wakeboarding! Or playing and singing on the guitar 🤙🏽
Singing🎶
@Cierram20 Then continue to sing 🎶
@Vidi I’ve had the same thing happen to me!
@Vidi How are you overcoming it?
@Cierram20 I just do it and tell ocd to back off
My OCD tells me that I don’t like singing lol because it can stress me out too
@Cierram20 Stress is the bodies reaction. Where do you feel the stress?
@Cierram20 Stress is okay to have
@UnashamedDavid116 Absolutely! Stress is normal we are human 🤙🏽 we just have to understand the situation of ocd we are in but we can handle it
@UnashamedDavid116 That’s so true! I think with the OCD i can dwell on the stress so much where i would get very itchy and queasy. So all over my body especially and my arms! I would also feel it in my throat
@UnashamedDavid116 I love to sing but i would have to keep repeating notes until i get it right, want to be perfect, and the spiral of it goes on and on which makes me question if I actually enjoy it.
@Vidi I like this shift of thinking! Keep up the CBT training!
@Cierram20 You enjoy it from what I hear you saying OCD tends to attach to things we ENJOY because we VALUE them I think the beautiful thing of CBT is to reeVALUate [reevaluate hahaha] or take the value of something again. This time we are taking the value of our thoughts in a new way. I love neuroscience! I’m not a therapist, but this has helped me release myself from my shame. Just remember you are not your OCD and your OCD is not you (the same thing said differently). Have hope that with following therapy, you are already ahead of many people who struggle in silence. We struggle together, because in order to grow we need to be stretched!
@UnashamedDavid116 And being stretched we recognize we are no our illness and as we go through and not around we recognize we are stronger then what ocd tells us
@Cierram20 OCD collab? LET’S GOOOOOO Let me do the perfection in the studio, of which there is nothing for vocals. Why do we like music created by humans and not by AI? AI does not have consciousness. It cannot really “think,” get a “virus,” or “die.” It’s funny when thinking about the analogies we give computers (and other things for that matter)
There is no such thing as perfection when it comes to vocals hahaha I think it’s interesting looking back at ERP. It’s not to insult US… it’s to target the physical BRAIN. We choose how we respond, even though levels of anxiety can make it more difficult
@UnashamedDavid116 I hope my brain understands that one day!! I truly appreciate you opening up your heart and sharing encouragement through your experiences. Thank you so much
Again, ask the therapist for how we should approach this. I also think that OCD CAN be a sense of us wanting control. OCD can be worse with outside things we perceive as stressors. I might also know socially that I can sing when I am happy but when there is a serious meeting, I know not to be. Learned cultural norms are interesting in this. As you can probably tell, I like discussion topics and sometimes spilling the thoughts :) Therapist advice first. That’s the relationship where more trust and vulnerability make the therapy easier.
Stand up comedy, boxing, fishing golf.
@Justanervousman That’s awesome bro a little stand up comedy is great!
I love making art and I’m in college for it, but sometimes it’s really hard to make when it involves sharp things that trigger my harm ocd :(
@beaniebabybird Keep it up with therapy! Maybe after some ERP’s you quickly find you love art again!
