From shame to self-love: AMA with Albert Aguilar
Before he was diagnosed with OCD at age 30, Albert Aguilar spent years struggling with symptoms that didn’t fit the stereotypes—and years feeling like he had to hide the parts of himself that make him who he is. Growing up queer in a world that wasn’t always accepting, he learned early on how painful it can feel to be dismissed or misunderstood. Everything began to change when Albert discovered NOCD through a friend who also lives with OCD. He joined the team, eventually decided to start therapy himself, and began working with a NOCD Therapist who he “absolutely adores.” Finally receiving a diagnosis and effective treatment helped Albert release shame and gain a new sense of confidence and purpose. Now, as a NOCD Member Advocate and a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community, Albert uses his lived experience to support others who might feel scared, ashamed, or alone. This Monday, June 29th, Albert is hosting a live Ask Me Anything (AMA) here in the NOCD app to talk about his OCD diagnosis experience, what treatment was actually like, and how his identity has shaped his journey. You can ask him about anything—from how he handled fear and shame, to what finally convinced him to try exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy, to how his life has changed since. Drop your questions in the comments below, and Albert will answer as many as he can on Monday, June 29th, at 3:30 PM PST / 5:30 PM CT / 6:30 PM ET. 👇
