When OCD makes everything feel contaminated
Nearly everyone worries about their health sometimes. But when OCD latches onto your health, it tends to go beyond everyday concern. Even simple tasks—eating, going outside, breathing—can feel loaded with danger. Health-related fears can feel incredibly real because our health is such a crucial part of our daily living and survival. Any amount of uncertainty around something so important can feel like it needs to be analyzed, solved, and completely ruled out. But certainty is actually never attainable—and OCD always keeps demanding more, no matter how much evidence we gather. If you're feeling afraid, exhausted, and unsure of what’s actually reasonable right now, you’re not alone. Many people in this community know what it’s like for fear to take over your day—and that life doesn’t have to feel that way forever, because OCD is treatable. Here are a few tips for dealing with contamination fears, both in the moment and long-term: 👀 Notice compulsions forming: Notice the urge to repeatedly check headlines, excessively wash things beyond recommendations, avoid foods or activities that have not been identified as a risk, or seek repeated reassurance. 🧑⚕️ Stick to standard safety guidelines: Try to follow recommendations issued by organizations like the CDC or WHO, without adding extra rules or rituals. 🚫 Resist the urge to try to appease OCD: When you feel compelled to engage in any of these behaviors, see if you can sit with the discomfort of not doing it, even for a few minutes. It might feel hard, but this can help make the fear less intense over time. 🩵 Seek out proper care: Exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy, the most effective treatment for OCD, is designed for situations just like this. It helps you practice tolerating uncertainty in small, manageable steps, so you learn that you can handle not knowing for sure, and that you don't need compulsions to feel okay. And finally, remember that you’re not alone in this. You’re part of a community that truly understands what you’re going through. We’re here for you, and our therapists are here to support you every step of the way.
