what medication has helped your OCD the most?
what medication has helped your OCD the most?
If you haven't tried medication, know that your doctor will start you off on a typically effective med like sertraline (Zoloft). Hopefully first time's the charm, but it can be a long, frustrating process to find the right one (or combo).
thanks for responding. currently on 10mg Lexapro. so so effect
@Anonymous You might already know this, but it looks like Lexapro can go up to 40 mgs. Not sure how long you've been on the 10 mgs, but it can take awhile and is a good sign if you at least see some improvement.
@Ben84 it's been a few months on Lexapro, but helping very little. I'm hearing great results from Zoloft!
SSRI helped the most for me. Sertralin… started on 50 mg and worked my way up to 200mg. Was on the medication for little over 10 years… maybe close to 14 not really sure. For most of it I was at 100mg until the last 3 years when the ocd symptoms got really bad. I had to stop taking it about 2-3 years ago cause I could no longer deal with the sexual side effects. I miss it though , it did help a lot. It helped me ease into ERP therapy as well. Honestly the ERP therapy helps way more once I really got into it. But the Zoloft has its place. Especially if you are struggling doing the ERP. I’ve tried other meds as well but the generic Zoloft was probably the most effective.
@I’m Batman Raw dogging ERP is about as fun as it sounds , but you do feel a bit of accomplishment doing it knowing now it’s all you. But if anyone needs the meds to help , I would not hesitate to recommend them.
@I’m Batman Are you completely unmedicated now? I want to stay away from SSRIs for many reasons but need to know there is hope in getting through this without meds
@heavensftw For about 3 years now maybe ? At least no medication for ocd. I take some for ADHD but ADHD meds are actually known to aggravate ocd not help it. Been doing ERP therapy with NOCD for a while now. I’ve done group sessions with folks that never took any medications for OCD at all and are in ocd recovery. So I’ve seen it happen with no meds. Met folks on meds that refuse to do ERP that still struggle. Met folks that tried 5 different types of medication before working it out. So there is no magic bullet for everyone. You have to see what works for you.
@I’m Batman Thank you so much
@I’m Batman Hey there. I just increased from 150 to 200mg 12 days ago and starting to see some improvement.. do you remember how long it took you when you increased to feel relief?
Batman! thanks so much for the info. I'm on 10mg of Lexapro and helps very little. I'm going to my psych nurse next week and will request it! thanks for encouraging words about ERP. I've had only 2 sessions and is upcoming!
@Anonymous If you have not already, try to find a DR that specializes in OCD. Typically doses for OCD are much higher then doses for depression or typical uses for SSRI. Some “non-ocd” drs won’t push doses as high because they don’t really need to with their depression patients. The International ocd foundation has more info on it and also will probably have OCD specialists in your area if you are not already seeing one. If your dr does specialize in ocd then you should be good. Good luck in your journey!!!
wellbutrin and luvox!
Luvox saved my life!!
