An end-of-summer mental health check-in
As fun as summer can be, it’s common to feel mixed emotions as the season starts winding down. Maybe your expectations didn’t match reality, the weather left you drained, or OCD made it hard to enjoy plans in the way you hoped. On top of the seasonal shift, school and work schedules are ramping back up, which can bring its own wave of stress. Transitions like this one can be a good time to check in with yourself. Here are a few questions that might help you get a clearer read on how you’re doing right now: 1. Are unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images, feelings, or urges interfering with your daily life? Think about whether you feel like you’re able to do the things you need to do, or whether your relationships are being impacted. 2. Are you spending an excessive amount of time performing physical or mental rituals, being lost in intrusive thoughts, or suffering from anxiety and distress? Anything over 1 hour per day is considered time-consuming. 3. Have your sleep or eating habits changed a lot recently? 4. Do you notice yourself avoiding activities, things, or people you enjoy? 5. If a friend described feeling the way that you feel right now, would you encourage them to seek out care and support? If you’re feeling overwhelmed or struggling, you’re not alone.
