What “tolerating discomfort” with OCD really means
If you've ever read that OCD therapy involves "learning to tolerate discomfort," and immediately wanted to close your browser, we get it. OCD can create intense, overwhelming distress that feels impossible to sit with, so it makes sense that the idea of tolerating anything unpleasant might sound unreasonable at first. But the discomfort OCD creates is a false alarm. Exposure and response prevention (ERP), the most effective treatment for OCD, is about practicing a different response to that alarm: staying put and letting the feeling exist rather than trying to escape it with a compulsion. Compulsions can feel like the only option in the moment, but they keep that false alarm system on high alert. The more you practice sitting with the discomfort, the more you can see that you never needed those compulsions to get through it. Over time, OCD’s false alarm loses its power, and feelings of distress can start to decrease. Read more: https://www.treatmyocd.com/blog/discomfort-doesnt-have-to-mean-distress/
