How to break a comparison/what if? compulsion?
I check my partner's ex's social media on what feels like a compulsive basis and I am trying to stop. It starts with a what if and there is a comparison piece to it too. Finding nothing doesn't settle it. I start looking for changes instead, and lately I've gone past her account to other ones to see what else is going on. So it keeps widening instead of closing. I also work fully remote, which I think makes it worse. There is no one around, no reason to put my phone down, and nothing structurally stopping me. The check takes ten seconds and no one would ever know. Except then ten seconds turns into ten minutes and turns into this never ending loop of looking for something. It feels like the urge has nothing standing between it and me all day. I know response prevention is the answer. What I want to know is what actually worked for you in the moment, especially if you work from home or are alone most of the day. And if anyone has dealt with the widening specifically, did it shrink back once you stopped checking the original account or did you have to work on it separately?
