Zoloft takes between 6-12 weeks for it to really get in your system. However, you’ll start to notice changes earlier than that too. Zoloft has helped me so much in lowering my anxiety and quieting my OCD thoughts. I’ve been on it for years.
It can take a few months before Zoloft is considered stabilized
I was on 200mg of Zoloft for almost 3 years and it helped on a general day to day basis, but I wasn’t in ERP therapy and didn’t know I had OCD at the time, so because I didn’t know how to manage my thoughts and emotions, I ended up admitting myself to a psych hospital over and over again. I just recently learned that it was a compulsion for me. I think it would have been more helpful if I had been doing ERP therapy alongside taking the medication.
I was recently diagnosed with OCD when I think I've had it for a really long time and I was able to manage my thoughts up until recently I'm nine months postpartum and I'm just really having a hard time not letting them get to me and it just puts my body into a panic mode and I can't stop thinking and then I just given to researching and trying to make myself feel better that I'm not the only one that feels these things and I know that's a compulsion. I'm starting ERP therapy on Monday I'm just really scared to talk about my thoughts
I am 16 months PP with my 3rd. I am in the same boat- mine is all about health stuff but I research WAY too much and want reassurance all the time. I am also starting ERP next Friday and plan to start Zoloft soon as well. I just want to enjoy this phase of my life and not have it be so consumed by my thoughts.
It helps me a lot but makes me eat more often

Happy to share! Starting ERP on Monday takes real courage, and being nervous about saying the thoughts out loud is one of the most common things people carry into a first session. One thing worth knowing on the medication side: SSRIs usually ease general anxiety well before they touch OCD specifically, so the dose increases your doctor mentioned are part of a longer timeline than most people expect going in. "Is Zoloft (sertraline) effective for OCD?" https://www.treatmyocd.com/medication/posts/is-zoloft-sertraline-an-effective-treatment-for-ocd Answers your exact question — Dr. Jamie Feusner explains that SSRIs typically reduce anxiety and depression within two to four weeks, but it can take six to 12 weeks to start reducing OCD symptoms, with improvement often continuing for weeks or months beyond that. "Should I tell people my intrusive thoughts? A therapist's advice" https://www.treatmyocd.com/what-is-ocd/info/related-symptoms-conditions/should-i-tell-people-my-intrusive-thoughts-a-therapists-advice Speaks to the part you said you're scared about — it covers what sharing your thoughts in ERP actually looks like, and how a therapist helps you separate genuine disclosure from confession and reassurance-seeking, which is the same mechanism behind the researching you noticed. "Postpartum OCD: Signs, Symptoms, and Treatment" https://www.treatmyocd.com/blog/postpartum-ocd-symptoms-treatment-therapy-erp Useful context for why thoughts you were able to manage for years can get much louder postpartum, and why medication and ERP together tend to work better than either alone. 💬 Was this response helpful? I’ve been on 200 mgs for about 5-6 yrs. I remember when I started on 25 mg about 13 years ago and we lightly increased the dosage over a span of months to gauge the best dosage. Definitely be open and honest with your doctor and express how you’re really feeling with your dosage for maximum support. SPEAK WITH YOUR DR BEFORE MAKING DECISIONS: consider inquiring about the addition of L-Methyl folate for your dosage’s maximum absorption, with your psychiatrist. (not yelling at you just want to make that disclosure) 🥺
