“My brain hijacked itself.” The Office’s Rainn Wilson on the OCD no one sees
Actor Rainn Wilson was dealing with a house fire, family challenges, and the feeling that everything was slipping out of his control. Then, suddenly, he found himself trapped in fear and thought spirals that wouldn’t let up. Rainn was no stranger to mental health struggles, having dealt with ADHD and anxiety for much of his life. But this felt different. The unwanted thoughts were constant and inescapable, and no amount of reassurance kept them from coming back. When talk therapy didn’t seem to help, it crossed Rainn’s mind that his experiences might be OCD—but because his symptoms were internal, he second-guessed it. Then, a friend pushed Rainn to pursue his hunch. Rainn found an OCD specialist, and within only a couple of weeks of starting exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy he noticed a difference. Now, in a special episode of Get to know OCD, Rainn is joining Dr. Patrick McGrath to open up about the years he spent trying to push the intrusive thoughts away, the exhausting toll it took, his journey to being diagnosed with OCD in his 50s and finally finding help, and how different his life looks today after getting the right treatment. ➡️ Watch the full episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwqVhOeV6es
