"But what if I secretly liked it?" A common & terrifying OCD thought, explained
Intrusive thoughts can be terrifying. But for some people with OCD, the fear doesn’t stop at the thought itself. OCD can take it a step further and ask: “What if I liked that?” It might latch onto a physical sensation, a lack of anxiety, a memory that feels blurry, or the feeling that you didn’t react “correctly” enough—and try to convince you that it all means something about who you are. That can bring up intense shame and make these thoughts feel especially hard to talk about, even in therapy. But this is actually a very common OCD pattern, and OCD specialists have heard intrusive thoughts like these before. You are not alone, and these thoughts do not define you. Most importantly: this is treatable. You can learn how to respond to these thoughts without letting OCD control your life.
