When OCD won't let you move on from the past
Being human means getting things wrong sometimes. We all make choices we later regret, and have moments we cringe about years later. But OCD can magnify those moments until the guilt, embarrassment, or shame shapes what we do, how we feel about ourselves, and whether we believe we deserve to move on. We asked Chrissie Hodges, a certified peer support specialist and mental health advocate who lives with OCD herself, to talk about what’s going on when OCD latches onto the past, and why it can feel so convincing. In this Q&A, she explains why self-punishment can become part of the OCD cycle, how you can relate to the past without being defined by it, and how effective OCD treatment can help you move forward. "Even if the real event is real, and you feel shame and guilt, what if OCD lit the match under it, and that's why it's a wildfire? And you can put that fire out, and maybe the embers pull you back in every once in a while, but you never have to fully ignite it again." -Chrissie Hodges Read the Q&A: https://www.treatmyocd.com/blog/real-event-ocd-qa-with-chrissie-hodges/
